I have just cut out some pin holes of rust from my Mk1 Escort fuel tank well. After cutting it out it is obvious that the spot welded flange between the rear quarter panel and the inner boot/well panel has rust along its length.

When restoring your cars would you unspot the entire length of that panel and clean up the surface rust or would you just leave it be? I do not intend to replace the whole panel but only the section I have cut out.

Comments??

Tried to upload a picture but I bet it doesnt work again....cannot udnerstand why??

Try using Internet Explorer or Opera to upload the pics. I normally use Firefox but it doesn't upload the pics correctly so I switch to Opera when I need to add photos to a post.

As for rusty seams, the extent of how far you go is up to you. The whole restoration process is like peeling an Onion. I've taken all the rust i've seen out of mine but it's a big job.

By the looks of what your showing us the metal is not too eaten away,
1) clean the proofcote seal out of the join on the boot side,
2) then clean up with wire circular disc in a drill or like wise and get rid of all rust are possible,
3) weld metal peice in,
4) then get some por15 and paint inside boot area allowing it to run into the seams of the boot & quarter & wheelarch,
5) nicky up & proceed normal repairs externally
