i never even noticed this section untill tonight. talk about not paying attention. some of you may have seen it in the showroom section but now i relise this is the spot for it.

this is my 1979 mk 2 project.
i baught it around a year ago but haven't had much time to do anything on it.
fist things first. need to weld up the holes in the floor.Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

i wanted to get the interior out of the way so i could concentrate on putting the new engine, diff and struts in.

i have a 2lt engine for it but its in another car at the moment. next job is to take it out and fix it (its running rough.) replacing gaskets and tuning it things like that. i also have a diff for it that needs to go in.

well i took the diff out of my other eski today. the diff that was in the blue one wasn't the right sort. i suspect it might be a celica diff but im not sure. i couldnt work out why escort tail shafts wouldn't fit to it. but when i put them side to side it easy to see that its not the standard diff.

the one on the left is the standard escort diff, right is the one that came out of it.Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

i installed the diff and fuel tank today.

the car is on the ground now and i can see how much difference the new struts made because the springs were cut on the other set and as it is defected it wouldn't pass the roadworthyness test.
before i couldnt fit a coke can under the car.

hopfully will be taking the engine out in the next couple of days

Dude

The diff that came out of it is an Escort diff, its just a Borg Warner. The other one you have is commonly known as an English diff.

Borg Warners (the ones with the cover plate on the back) are common in Mk1's, haven't seen one in a MK2 before but who knows....maybe it was swapped out of a MK1 years ago..

English diffs are popular because you can change the ratios over easily by swapping the centre over without pulling the whole thing apart.

Cheers

next step is to strip it down and change the gaskets, adjust valve clearences, adjust the timing , fix oil leak which is coming from the rocker cover gasket.
then mate it up with my manual gearbox and chuck it in the other escort.

well its been a couple of months since i posted an update. unfortunatly not much has happened since then. i have been concentrating on taking all the goody bits off the green machine for spares and whatnot.
i have got a new head for the motor. the old head was well and trulry F****. the cam shaft lobes were flat on top.

as some of you might of seen in the paint forum i have painted some engine parts. if not here they are.Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

ive been doing quite alot of cleaning the last few days and i am finally redy to start rebuilding the motor. i have the whole next week off so im hoping by the end of it the motor and gearbox will be redy to drop in. :)
this is the motor in its current state.
