Hi guys,
I’ve just had the 4 speed gearbox rebuilt on my RS2000 and its all good except for a major leak from the speedometer drive. Does anyone have an exploded diagram showing how the speedo cable seals to the gearbox. I don’t recall seeing a seal when I installed the cable.

You should be able to see the seal once you have removed the cable - just a small rotating shaft lip seal.
 
I have also had the oil leak through the cable itself. The oil was leaking out between the metal flange ferule & the cable outer sleeve. Fixed that with tiny amount of silastic.

I thought there had to be a seal. Looks like my gearbox has come back from being rebuilt with no seal. Can I get this seal locally from the bearing shop or do I have to order it from someone like Burtons. You don't happen to know the size of the
seal ?

Hi Paul,
I no longer have a 4 speed box, but have spare seals for the 5 speed type 9 box.
It is stamped 8 x 16 x 7 (8mm shaft  x 16mm housing x 7mm thick), & may be the same as the 4 speed. Hopefully you can measure your 4 speed with vernier calipers.

Hi Gregg,
I replaced the speedometer oil seal and after a couple of days sitting on the hoist everything was still completely dry so I thought I had it sorted. However, with the help of a friend I ran the car slowly in gear whilst it was still on the hoist and gear oil virtually poured out from what appears to be the rear right hand corner of the bolt on top cover plate. The oil is then running down the right hand rear corner of the gearbox housing and dripping/running off just in front of where the speedo cable enters. At first I thought it looked like a leak from the top plate gasket but there also seems to be oil sitting in the recess around the top of the cover which would seem to indicate that the oil may be coming from the breather but it seems to be way too much oil to be that. The oil in the attached picture only took about a minute of running on the hoist in gear. This gearbox thing is starting to wear me out. Any ideas ?

Yes Paul, I can't see that amount of oil coming from the breather in a minute. There's usually a baffle/shield on the underside of the cover to stop oil coming out the breather, & it is a tiny hole. I presume the box is just filled to the bottom of the fill hole.
Seems like the top cover hasn't been sealed properly unfortunately.

Yes Gregg, the oil was definitely only filled up to the bottom of the filler hole. I thought that maybe the oil was coming from between the top cover and the gearbox but the oil on top of the cover has me thinking maybe from the breather but I can't see why it should leak so much from here. I wonder if the leaking oil could have worked its way upwards on to the top of the cover when I first drove the car. Seems unlikely though.
