Hello all does anyone know which way around the proportioning valve goes? Does the bolt face the firewall or front of car? It's the one under the brake booster....
Sounds like a dumb question but its been an age since I took it off and can't find a pic of it in any of my manuals.....
Cheers Drew..........

Here's a truly miserable photo of it (cropped from a larger one), which is the best I've got I'm afraid.  Hopefully it will help.

Hi Drew,
Have you stripped it and replaced the seals on the shaft inside? Might be good if it hasn't been used for while.  Also if you run discs on the rear the engineer who certified my conversion said to remove the valve from inside so the brake bias was 50/50, rather than 60/40 for those with rear drum brakes.

Cheers,
Len

Not good advice at all. Bias has got nothing to do with type of brakes. If a particular car needs 60/40 bias, that's what it needs regardless wether its drum or disk. Bias required varies from car to car but typically rwd cars are 60-70/40-30 and fwd cars 70-80/30-20 bias.
50/50 bias will induce too much rear lock up.
My rs is spot on at around 70/30.

do you know if you can run a standard master with the big brake kit ( upc) of the front and r31 of the rear?

All finished now.. it's on standard brakes so the extra info isn't needed..... yeah I've had it seen too Len, Perth brake parts have been great, the only problem I've had with one of these was, ironically, the brake fail sender failing, leaking and not even setting off the brake fail light, haha, needed a change of pants after that one.........
Cheers Drew...............

What did an overaul of the valve set you back Drew?

Interesting take,RS2000. I didn't change my valve as the car was complete when inspected and I wasn't going to pull it apart with brake fluid going everywhere and ruining my paint. Is it because front discs are usually larger, even though drive comes from the rear?

In the Mk2 workshop manual this device is called a "differential valve assembly" and fitted with a "Pressure Warning Differential Switch".
In the Mk2 parts list up to 12/76 none was fitted then from 12/76 to 11/77 a 5 port assembly was fitted (Pt. No 73EB 2K493 CA) and from 11/77 a 4 port assembly (Pt. No 73EB 2K493 DA).
I believe the only purpose of the device is to light the brake fail lamp when either front or rear circuit fails.
I have not owned an Escort for some time but if I remember correctly on the later Mk2's the right front brake was fed directly from the master cylinder and the left front fed via the differential valve assembly.
I also remember asking at the parts counter about a repair kit and being told it is not a serviced part.
