It's been a while since an update, and not much has been done for some time. But a lot of things this week.
Finally had a replacement boot floor welded with the help and equipment of a good friend, which ends all of the essential body repairs. My Radtec MK1/Mk2 YB intercooler radiator kit arrived from England on Thursday which I have started to fit.

And FINALLY! found a nice set of Simmons V4's. I love my 13x7 minilites but may have to run a Hoppers Stoppers front brake kit which requires 15" wheels so I pounced on these quick smart being so rare they hardly ever come up for sale and they're one of my fav wheels. Can't wait to try them on.

how much of the rad support panel needs the chop for the airtec unit? serious looking bit of gear, loving the build was worried when i hadnt seen an update for a while

Great bit of welding, I can appreciate how long that would have taken tacking it into place then filling all in between.
 
Could you please post another pic when you have ground it down, I reckon it will come out pretty good.

Most of the rad support gets cut out right to the bottom with some side edges left so there's metal to weld on profiled plates, to block air getting past the intercooler. I got it mounted today and played around with it a fair bit before I was happy with it. Turns out, the underside of slam panel has some plate whereby I could use mud washers to mount the top of intercooler. I will tack the washers in later.  I used 6mm philips head screws and simply drilled a couple of access holes in slam panel to get to them. Really happy with this solution. Intercooler is pushed as far forwards as possible with this fitment. Bottom plate of intercooler gets tek screwed to some steel I'll weld into the bottom radiator cut out (it's a 2L shell)

Thanks Mish, so busy towards the end of last year, had no time for it. The kit is Radtec, not the cheaper Airtec

yeah that's come up great.
I liked that there looked to be plenty of weld to be able to grind back and not fear that youd be taking too much off.
I can't seem to get a thick weld bead like that yet, at least on panel steel but its a goal to work towards.
Neat job on the rad, looks exy.

Thanks no worries. It was a very expensive industrial grade welder and a very experienced user :) Once the boot floor was tacked in he did bout 30% of the welding & I finished the rest. Except the gaps, where I held a brass bar underneath the car while he filled with weld.
 
I own a 150A Cigweld that I had been using gasless with limited success. I just got a bottle of argon and still can't get it to perform anything like my mates one. Gasless got better penetration but also contaminates the weld.

I figure your cleaning up with the flap disks? I'm also using gasless wire, I cant remember what size the wire is, but it can be a hard weld to clean. The flap wheels do such a good job though, I risk taking it all off as welds can look so seamless.
