Have now fitted a mk1 cortina axle to the escort and need to set the correct angle before welding on the spring saddles.

What is the easiest way to do this at home? I dont have an angle finder? Is there something I can use like a small spirit level and a protrector or similar?
From my understanding, I need to set diff and gearbox at the same angle?

Otherwise, do I just do it by eye?????

Suggestions?

Thanks? Shaun

I'm pretty sure binning sell a magnetic angle finder. The angles should be equal but opposite so they end up essentially parallel. I would also recommend an extra degree nose down on the diff so when under power it becomes aligned

Hi mate,
The diff should be set at 4 Degress up, the same as the Works cars. The engine should also be leaning back at 4 Degrees. Bunnings sell at Magnetic protractor for about 30 bucks which you can either set on the cam cover for the engine or on the casing of the diff to get it right.
Cheers

Shaun, don't bother with the Bunnings magnetic protractor. I have got one and they are not very accurate (ie:crap).
I would go for something like this https://www.machineryhouse.com.au/M977#
And I think we all know it's better to give them money than Bunnings.

Craig.

PS when you work out the best angle....let me know.

Shaun,
Dont experiment with angles. The car should be set to 4 Degrees up for the diff, tailshaft and 4 degrees sloping back for the engine as per the Works Escort manual. It has been tried and tested for over 40 years so no need to reinvent the wheel.
Thats a good item Craig suggested although I have used the Bunnings one for years doing the engines and setting up the 4 link.

Ulsterman is right set the diff to 4deg. I did that with my Mk1 2litre  in the late70,s and did not have any trouble, It is the correct works setting.

Thanks guys.

Looks like 4 degress it is....

Craig, that looks good.  Problem is, H&F is worse than bunnings, there's no way I could go in and JUST get that....... scared I'll walk out with a new milling machine.

Now, while I'm under there....to watts on not to watts......
