Think about how far you can turn a steering wheel lock-to-lock. The 360's one is only 360 degrees (one rotation) I think the new Forza one may be 540. But wheels like the g25, g27 and some of the Fanatec Porsche wheels have sustainability from anywhere beetween 180-900 (more realistic at 900).

Problem with Mircosoft is they don't want to support wheels like these as it takes away from their revenue. So whilst Forza may be a great game, you can never really run it asa driving simulator.

A.K.A. If your buying a console purely for a driving game, buy a ps3. I have to admit I have both and my PS3 doesn't get touched, but that's because I rarely play driving games.

Why don't you get the wife to invest the same money and get you actual race car driving lessons, be it rally or tarmac.

There are many places that offer these and the experience, knowledge & information you will get out of it in one day would probably equal 3 years of playing the computer games.

Having said that I have the PS 3 and it rocks!!

As others have said, sim racing isn't necessarily going to make you a better driver but it can help when learning a track and with reflexes and concentration. The track learning component is not really relevant unless you're going into sim racing on a PC, as there aren't many Australian tracks on either of the decent console games.
I have had both console and PC setups and by far the most realistic setup you can get is iRacing on the PC, which is what I'm currently using. If you're going to stick with a console setup, then I'd suggest a Logitech G27 wheel and pedals, a PS3 and Gran Turismo 5. If you want something to sit in and mount the pedals to then maybe look at an Obutto.

the actual set up i'm looking at is from Pagnian Imports,  GTxtreme V2, Fanatec 911 GT3V2 and clubsport pedal Tuning kit.
I've been looking at iRacing and also Rfactor and total immersion.
It seems I will have to press my one remaining pc into use.
I have a three monitor set up already that I use with my other hobby ( ham radio ) so that can be added easily.
I really only want to do time trial type racing and possibly tarmac rally as well.
I don't really expect it to help in anyway towards actual driving skills, but it could be a lot of fun.
I have no interest in wheel to wheel racing type games just competing against the clock. Given that which would you guys recommend ?
I really appreciate the time you have taken to make suggestions, it can be such a waste of money when you really don't know enough about things!

And to Matt75, actual lessons are planned as soon as I'm happy with the actual car setup.
Cheers

I don't know much about the GTxtreme but it looks like it'll do the job. The Fanatec wheels have been getting mixed reviews, so I hope your experience is a positve one. I have the clubsport pedals on my setup and they're great.

What are you using to run your triple monitor setup at the moment? I have a triple monitor setup on my PC using a TripleHead2Go and it works well.

As for the time trial type racing, I'm not really sure what sim would be best. I have rFactor on my PC, but only really use it when I want to learn a new track which isn't available on iRacing. iRacing isn't cheap, but it's definitely the most realistic sim available, so it depends what you're after. If I was you, I'd probably buy a copy of rFactor for now and wait a few months for rFactor2 to be released.

Novice question: Do these steering wheels have realistic feedback? As if you are driving a real car?
