Could someone please confirm that the steering rack mount bolt centres on a standard Mk2 Escort engine x-member are 255mm apart?
I'm trying to fit a new "Rally Design" (I think that's the problem right there, to be honest!) quick rack to a new "GRP4 fabrications" WCXM, and the mounts don't line up at all, not even close!
The distance between mount centres is 255mm on my x-member & 260mm on the steering rack, so something is clearly out by 5mm.
I think the problem is most likely the weld on bracket on the steering rack being out of position, but I'd like to identify or eliminate the wcxm as the issue first.  So if anyone can help with confirming the 255mm measurement that'd be great thanks.

I have 2 standard XM's here - 1 is around 255mm and the other is around 258mm.

Thanks for the info guys, much appreciated, and yeah. . . buying from "Really bad Design", what was I thinking!
Still can't pinpoint which part is out of whack though, going by the different measurements it could be the rack or the x-member.
The rack's the easy one to modify though, so I might as well just cut off the bush locating bracket & weld it back on in the right place, it's crooked as it is anyway.

Even the large bush doesn't fit properly.
It's 6mm too big across the bottom so I can't see how it's going to grip the rack tightly.
If I cut the bush into two pieces (not ideal, but it's workable) & remove 6mm from the bottom section so it fits, then the clamp won't grip the bush as the clamp is designed for the original bush size?
Or am I missing something there?

Surely that can't be right?
The rack mount measures 39mm at it's widest point & the bush is 45mm across the bottom.
The bushes came with the rack as did the clamps to fit them. The clamps were so far out that they went straight in the bin!

It's VERY disappointing to think you're buying a quality product from a well known supplier and you get this!

This is purely the reason I made my own bias pedal box as I couldn't trust that I was going to get a product that was better than I could do myself - and for a comparable price (taking my time into consideration).

FYI my OEM Ford rack mount (on the body) is 40.2mm at it's widest point across the base of that same mount. My Nolathane bush is 41mm (ID) at the same corresponding point. Re-measured my OEM XM without the rack mounted (more accurate) and it's closer to 257mm. My other XM measured 258mm as per above.

Yep, disappointing sums it up alright.
It seems that even new aftermarket parts can be made to 1970's Ford tolerances. Not really the kind of authenticity I was after!
Thanks again for the info Paul. By the looks of things the XM and the rack could both be out by a couple of mm in opposite directions at the mounts. Ah well, at least resizing the bush is an easy fix, much better than the rack being freakishly narrow at the mount.
The joys of modifying cars eh?
