Seeing as my car has been off the road for a while it's sort of turned into a bit of a project. So I thought it might be a good idea to put something up here.

I'll start from when I first got the car, with pictures too!

I got the car in May 2005, it was a bog stock (apart from cam, extractors and exhaust) 1600 Mk2 4 door GL (originally ghost gum) with an RS nose. The previous owner liked XY GT's so decided to put a hornet scoop and XY GT bonnet stripes on, which have since magically disappeared from the car.

Yep, I was the coolest dude at school cause I had a hood scoop and stripes [88]

Shortly after I got my license (6 days to be precise!) the 1600 expired. The plan was to throw a 2L in then, but there were none in Brisbane up for grabs that I could find at the time, so I just had the 1600 rebuilt, so I had the car back in 9 days.

So, naturally the next thing on the list was to source a new bonnet, and some 13x7's.

It had a horrible stance though, but I drove it around like that for a fair while. Then at the end of 2006 I bought another Escort with a 2L and 5spd as a parts car, so then I pulled the motor suspension (just superlows up front and panel van 4 leaf rear) and transferred the springs accross to the red car, but the motor stayed out of the car for 2 months or so.

Then came the first time the car was pulled off the road (February 2007), to put the 2L with 60thou bore, ACL flat tops, decked head, port and polish, nice big crow cam, twin DHLA40s and the type 9.

I've tried to put these few pictures in order (yep, done in a single car width garage in a unit complex, beauuuudy!).

I knew that the car would come back off the road eventually because there was a lot of things I wanted to do, so when the ignition switch broke in July 2007 I had an excuse to do things seeing as the car wouldn't start.

It sat for a few months before I actually got around to getting started on it...

But anyways, this is how it stood 2 weeks ago (after having to move the car from it's old home in the unit complex). These are the latest photo's I have until tomorrow.

Got stuck into sanding the engine bay to lay some new paint on.

Nice one,its great to see how cars progress over the years.. my computer crashed last week and I have been going through alot of old backed up cd's that i have burned over the years and geez i have a lot of pictures of my car.. pretty much all of them are of something that is pulled to pieces ha.. its not hard to see where the money goes when you look back [}:)]

Here's the new pictures as promised.

Smoothed the visible parts of the engine bay and got rid of the little tabs on the passenger side for the wiring loom because they're not needed anymore. Left some of the divets there because they're hidden by either carbies or booster bracket and things like that.

And this is what happens when you do a "red-eye" reduction on a photo of a red car (I was bored the other day), the reflectors in the tail lights went green - yuck!

hey mate i love it, gives me a lot of ideas for what im about to do to my 1600 GL, just a quick question, how much did the twin DHLA40s set u back? ive never actually looked into side-draught carbs yet and ive read that these arent too much overkill for everyday road use like the twin 45's are...

Hey mate thanks for the kind comments.

The 40s came with the motor when I bought it, so I'm afraid I can't help you there sorry, but they definitely aren't overkill for everyday use. This was my everyday car last time it was on the road and it was fine to drive in traffic, didn't kill my wallet and there is still plenty of grunt there.

sweet as, looks tops anyways, i was reading about quad carb set ups using bike carbs haha but i can imagine that tuning would be an absolute pain, i really think the set up u have here would be the way to go, tuning would be a lot easier and as u say, a lot more forgiving on the wallet

Finally had some decent weather to get the engine bay painted, but after it dried we noticed that the paint shop provided me with a colour that was slightly too light. Such a shame too because it came up like glass.

So I decided while we were at it, might as well smooth everything else that was left to save time last time and also weld up un-necessary holes.

This is after the paint went on, the flash on the camera really exaggerates how light the colour really is. In a few more weeks once everything else and the interior and boot are sorted, it will be redone.

Looking good Juiceman. I would love to see it in the flesh one day!! I'm finally getting a few bits and pieces on my car resprayed/repaired next week.

It's been a while since the last update so I thought I'd give a quick one. Boot is finished and the engine bay is ready for paint (again). More updates to come in the next few weeks hopefully.
