I have some square LED lights (new) that i was going to use for a trayback ute... but noticed that the Escorts rear lights were faded, and cracked (seals buggered).

what i am thinking;

1. mark up a piece of stiff card with the shape / angles needed,

2. cut bend up a piece of (stainless?) sheet - 3mm?

3. use the same mounting holes to mount the plate

4. mount the LED lights to the plate, wire them up to old wires

5. run a length of 90 degree rubber edging(from clark rubber)for a seal

6. fit and test

plan is to make them fully swappable - no mods - so i can put the old ones back in if it doesnt work / doesnt look the way i like.

anyone else done custom rear lights?

anything i should look out for with wiring LED's to the current wires?

i also have some LED reversing lights and number plate lights. if these work, i might go with a full LED rear light system![88]

not sure on the making of the lights bit but when changing to LED's you'll more than likely need to swap your flasher unit for an LED type. LED lights use less current/amps so if you don't change the flasher unit your indicators won't operate properly and the flash rate will be wrong ( they end up flashing like they do when a bulb is blown, flash sequence is usually really fast or the globes stay lit up and dont flash at all ).

That part is easy fixed, all you need to do is put a resistor in the wiring so the flasher unit 'sees' more load.

If you can do an LED conversion that looks like standard tail lights then i say good, if they dont look standard it will most likely olook shizenhaussen

mocked up a blanking plate to show you what i was thinking...

Add the lights (yes they arent straight, but just for show)

then, Old versus New...

painted black and refined a little more, i think they should look alright...

and yes, i have thought about reversing lights... :)

Thats what Hyundai Excels are for.

Old looks better IMO.
