OK, im painting my hilux in original metallic grey. For some reason ive got patchy paint, like strips from where i didn't paint over the the coat before perhaps. I put a clear on because i thought stuff it i need it on the road. But.. i want it right, so do i sand it back the clear with like 800grit and try and redo the base coat again, or what the go.

Any help would be great, i need to know tonight, as somethign will happen tomorrow, good or bad.

Sounds like your painting in Acrylic. yes rub it back and adjust your gun to fan out a bit more. your getting dry edge.

Let the clear harden for a few weeks,then cut it with 800 wet and dry,being extremely careful not to break the surface of the clear.
Recoatvery carefully as the basecoat will raect with the fresh clear and fry it up.
See your paint supplier and ask if they supply a transparent sealer,which,when used properly,will prevent solvent reaction with the fresh clear. This,although extra work and cost,will avoid the possibility of having to remove all the fresh paint.
this advice is from a spraypainter with 35years experience.

Adjust the gun so that you have around 35PSI at the gun.
Reduce your basecoat approx 40% and overlap your strokes by about half.
When you have everything covered evenly,reduce another 10% and lightly spray with a crosshatch pattern. let the basecoat set up for around 20min then apply the clear.
