Hi everyone.

Got a 1976 P-van, need to remove the doors for some rust repair.

I've read you can either knock the pins out, or some models have bolts behind the kick panels? which would make it a whole lot easier.

What have people done, and what tools (for hinges) are best.

cheers,

Alex

A door pin removal tool is the easy way, but rust will be behind the hinges.
If you do remove the pins, don't push the bottom pin down.

Just mark where the hinges are on the body before you remove the door.

Easiest way is to remove the kick panel to access the four nuts that hold the door on. Make sure you tightly pack a rag in the cavity at the very bottom below the bottom nut. That way if you slip and drop a nut or the rectangular washer it won't fall into the sill cavity.

UK e-bay sell them. Try a local panel shop with a carton under your arm.

yeah, just ended up cutting them off... pins were so fused. Didn't want to, but couldn't see the alternative. Wish they were bolt on doors!

Alex, when I removed my Mk1 doors I tried the pin removal tool. Dont wasta ya money. It bent on the second decent hit ($50 in bin). I got some scrap 2x1" scrap metal and welded a 8mm metal dowel onto the end. Does the same job and is much stronger. Worked for me anyway. Oh and use WD40 and a paint stripping heat gun to get the hinges nice and hot before you bash the pins (try not to let the heat soak into the pin too much else they will expand also and you will have achieved nothing).

Next inquiry might be "howe am I going to refit my doors?" Good luck with that.
