Hi Guys,

So I have finally got the engine back in the car and desperately trying to get it ready for an inspection. But I don't seem to have any spark, meaning the motor wont fire.

The whole engine has been out, and put back in. Im pretty sure ive wired everything up properly.

The coil has the negative wire going to it - no problems, that's hooked up.
The coil also has one positive connector that just pushes down on top of the positive terminal on the coil, and another one that runs off to the condenser on the distributor.

Odd thing is, the VERY first time I hit the key, I got a spark (checking with my screwdriver earthed in one of the spark leads). I hooked the main coild spark lead on and hit the key, and it fired up!....just for a second. But since then, no spark.

Ive checked the fuses in the fusebox, all ok.

The +ve and -ve leads to the coil are getting power, ive checked them with my multimeter.

Unless im missing something, I didn't think they were that complicated, but obviously ive got something wrong somewhere.

Can anyone provide any ideas or pointers as to something I may have missed?.

Kind regards

Dave

If still running points,
Points condensor on distributor should be connected to coil -ve. It sounds like you have +ve and -ve wrong way around??

Also don't forget ballast by pass wire on starter motor if pinto or same wire on starter relay if kent.
Leaving this wire off will produce no spark on crank.

ahhh my bad. I was incorrect in my original post. They terminals are corrected to the right posts.

However RS2000, I did come across a post of yours from some time ago offering some advice on why Matt75's car wouldn't start.

Going back to basics has indeed isolated the problem to the coil. I have a new one being delivered shortly (bless my angel wife), and will report back.

Once again mate, a bag of smarties and a picnic bar for you.

Mine ended being a blown fuse wire from the starter to the battery caused by the altenator shorting out on the body.

Good luck

Matt
