I'm not sure, but this may have had something to do with it:

As far as I know, it was just a standard diff. I've got a borg warner LSD sitting here, but it needs some mods to fit properly. Guess it's time to put her in properly.

My guess is its at woodlands industrial estate in braeside.

Blake id say just stick another stocka diff in the green car for now, and stick the borgwarner into your project mk1 shell. What motor is planned for your project btw?

Nah, it's in a bunch of factories in Moorabbin. Not sure of the name.

I'm thinking of just sticking a standard one in there and locking it. But it's embarrassing doing one-wheelers, and I'd like to be able to thrash it without having to worry about blowing it up again. [:p]

I just chucked out a locked 3.9 centre in the hard rubbish collection a few weeks back, would have saved you having to weld it up. Ive had a locked centre and axles last almost a year with a fairly stock pinto, and 205 nankangs, with lots of enthusiastic driving. Most linelocks were done in the wet though.

Most axles after that lasted 2 to 3 months each however. Is your borgwarner LSD, if so it might be worthwhile sticking it in. If not re-co borgie lsd centres are around the $500 mark, which makes a locked escort diff seem alot more promising.

Would it be possible to lock this one, or does it depend on how bad I've busted it? Otherwise will I have to chuck a whole new diff in, or can I just swap the centerpiece?

One last question (I know sh*t-all about diffs [:I])... How does a locked one cope with daily driving? Will I get that bouncing whatnot going around corners, or what?

bouncing and skipping yes! but this is only really noticable under 20kph. above that you wont notice it. When parking at shopping centres you will get alot of attention also. Not the best for a daily driver, but i would rather a locker than single spin any day. I would not run anything over a 205 tyre -> more grip = more strain on poor esky axles

Have you blown your current centre, or have you just snapped an axle? Do you get any forward movement when in gear? If you just snapped a twig, you can pull your centre out and weld up the spider gears, and stick another axle in it. If you have blown the centre you will no about it when you pull it out.

Either way your gona have to pull out the axles and centre. Just follow a haynes manual and its a piece of cake!

Tip: Stick some headbolts or metal plate into the spider gears before you weld it up for some strength.

I can still drive it, barely though. I managed to drive it about 200m from where it broke to a friends house, but lost all movement after that. Just tried again a few hours ago, and managed to move it around my driveway, but it's making huge clunking noises, and the gears come and go (only has second sometimes).

I dunno, I'm tempted to just send it off somewhere and get it fixed properly. But on the other hand I wouldn't mind pulling it off the road for a while and fixing everything myself.
