Hi Guys,

just cam back into the county and pulled my esky out of the garage. shes running sweet but theres a hellish sound coming from the back axle. Its not a loud whine, which I guess would be the diff gears on their last legs. Its a low, dull grinding noise, which increases with speed. I have put a special diff oil additive in the diff centre last time i was home (1 year ago), which didn't really help.

As a guess, would you point towards the diff centre being the problem? Ive been told to replace the wheel bearings...

Any comments?

Thanks in advance!!

is it noisy all the time? if so its probably axle bearings.

if the noise goes away ( on/off throttle or accel/deccel) then its probably diff.

thanks kurt, ill put an ear to it next time I hop in the car. with the axle bearings, are they on the diff centre housing? which would mean the 'wheel bearings' I'm told to replace are something totally different then...

Gdub

Axle bearings and wheel bearings are the same thing. They are pressed onto the axles.

The bearings on the side of the diff are called carrier bearings.

These sorts of things are impossible to diagnose sitting in front of a computer. Take the car to someone who knows about this sort of stuff and get them to drive it and hear it for themselves.
