  • To full reco or not to full reco? I've got a few hours to decide!

I've taken off my head on the escort (1.6l) to inspect the leak between the head and block. I cannot see any damage to the head, gasket or block so I'm thinking maybe the head wasn't torqued down correctly or that the head is warped. I've gotten a quote done for a full reco @ $550 with unleaded seats or a machine flat and crack test @ $100... Now I'm not made of money and my budget of $3500 to get on the road is coming close to being gone and I haven't been able to score many hours at work lately. I did a compression test and got roughly #1 @ 160, #2 @ 155, #3 @144 and #4 @ 153. I Also have to consider that I'm going to either rebuild another engine or get a pinto in about 8-12 months so what would you guys recommend? I know a full reco will be better in the long run. I'm getting it done today! I also need to do something to my master cylinder as it is leaking between the master cylinder and booster so money is drying up at the moment.

If money is an issue and you're looking at dropping a pinto in soonish maybe just look for another second hand long motor to just slap in there to get you through

Yeah I had a look for a second hand long motor with no luck, It's going to cost me around $250 for the head to get machined, vacuum tested and a vrs kit with head bolts. Head is at the engine shop and will be ready to pick up in a week...

Quick question, was the head gasket std composite or copper? Reason is copper leak coolant just for fun.
The engine shop can check for flatness without skimming head. why new head bolts? I think they are just going to relieve the strain on your wallet clasp.
I would ask them to check flatness and report findings from there you can decide how to proceed. A pressure test is a must. both these checks are not expensive. call me on 0419499362 If you need quick answer/advise when the shop advise you on head condition.
