Hi all,
    What prep is required before painting items that deal with heat such as brake calipers, radiators,vextractors and  engine blocks etc. I know there are specific paints for each but do you use an undercoat for these parts? If so does it have to be heatproof undercoat. I use etch primer on things but Im not sure if this is the right product to use.

Shep, after reading the title to this thread I was coming in to say 'grind off the serial numbers' !! But no...in all seriousness it depends on what temps the components are going to see...engine blocks, radiators etc 2 pak with etch primer is ok... anything that gets close to exhaust temp ceramic coating is the way to go. Depends on how 'serious' the finish is to be...is it just a coat of paint or is it all about the finished product and the way it looks?

The VHT enamel goes alright, it's good for rocker covers, blocks etc. I haven't tried their 'Very High Temp' paint. Instead I bought the 3M stuff from supercheap, it was $5 cheaper than VHT

I saw the 3M stuff. They actually have an engine enamel primer so that solves that question. Im not too bothered for show quality paint. Just need to clean up and restore brakes, motor, radiator etc and I dont want to do it only to have the paint peel off in 6 months
