Just making a new dash fascia for my mk2 and am looking at getting a water temp, oil pressure and voltemeter.

voltemeter is straighforward, however, would i need to buy electric or mechanical gauges for my '78 mk2??? do all brands hook up? is there any advice a fellow gauge installer could supply!

Electric is alot easier to install and you wont need to worry about the possiblity of hot oil pouring into the cabin should the oil line come loose on the back of a mechanicial guage. All tho on the other hand the mechanicial will be more accurate if your chasing every last bit of accuracy. Yes all the brands will be able to be hooked up providing they come with their own senders.
