I just rebuilt my RS engine in the shed(standard bore/BVH with porting, cam etc....) it cost me around $250, honed, new rings, all bearings (rods, mains, cam),gaskets, welsh plugs, lapped the valves, valves stem seals, and main seals front and rear,ARP rod bolts, wash and paint.
Just buy a VRS gasket set which has everything in it,measure your bores, inspect your crank and rods for damage,if in doubt take then to a trustworthy engine builder for inspection. Then buy all your bearings and rings go for it.
I also asked for a price to build my engine up, $500labour + parts and machining required.
Still fairly cheap.
I have 2 or 3 more engines to build up and sell soon for a bit of fun and $$$$,its quite relaxing......
