Ok guys had this car for a little while and it has taken a bit longer than expected due spending too much time at work ! But its getting closer. The "idea" was to buy a good RS body shell and build the mechanicals up from stuff that I already had laying around from previous projects.
Bought the car off Paul Dunstan late last year (November I think)PS Paul is a top bloke and the car was as described....
THE GOOD;
Retrimmed interior
Tinted windows (not the best but keeps the sun off the interior)
Adjustable strut tops
Nolathane style suspension bushes here and there
CD player w/6x9 rears and 6in fronts
Pretty good paint work all round
THE BAD;
No Wheels
No Motor
Bit of rust in the C pillars (which RS doesn't), behind each rear wheel arch and heater dome.
So the first priority was to make sure I had all the mechanicals when I dropped the car up to my shed in Tamworth I had a walk around and found a gearbox, alternator, starter motor on the shelf but the only motor I had in stock, had been turbo'd before so I wasn't real sure about how good the bores would be as last time it was in a car it was EXTREMLY SMOKEY, the hunt was on for a runner as this RS was only meant to be some cheap fun..... Found an engine at a wreckers in campbelltown that was meant to be a recently rebuilt runner "Meant to be".
The "Meant to be rebuilt" Runner
So we pulled the engine down and the first thing we noticed was that their was something rattling in the sump.... it appears that the spot welds that hold the baffle in had come undone and the crank and the baffle had come to blows, removed the crumpled mess that was the baffle and was concerned to find the crank with a mild dusting of surface rust !!! Cut a long story short the motor had been run with water in it ! time for a rebuild !
The Rebuild
A further search through the shed found a cam that is of unknown origin that I acquired from a bloke over 10 years ago with a turbo kit the guy was clearing his shed out it was a bonus his words to me were that it was too wild for the street.... PERFECT ! next I called up my favourite parts store and ordered the rebuild kit, plus some waggot double valve springs and 60thou over hepolite's taking it out to 2.1L LOVELY, got a Rollmaster cam wheel while I was at it and that was all the parts needed so far, a quick hone and back together it went not before getting valve bind because of how much lift the cam had, took 5 thou out of the spring seat and problem solved !
Plated and 2pac'd the engine bay took two goes to get the colour right pine'n'lime, then installed the motor.
Induction & Exhaustion !
Had some 45mm Webers on the shelf that I had'nt used before being a SU bloke, having heard stories about keeping multiple carbs balanced I thought I'd give one 45mm Weber a go and put the biggest chokes in it (38mm apparently) although im gonna start with the 36mm chokes that came with the carbs until I get it dyno'd. Extractors from the shelf a coat of pot belly paint and that had the exhaust side taken care of.
Well thats the story so far still a ways to get rego but at least the motor is in and I will be hearing it's lumpy idle soon.... so now pics !!
