Hi All,

I'm looking at removing my Type 9 and replacing it with a stronger transmission to handle the new turbo pinto build.
Searching retroford etc and also local suppliers in Australia, the Mazda N7 5 speed gearbox seems to be getting allot of air time. Viteese etc are also using these.

N7 Mazda MX5 Five Speed Gearbox (Used) (MX5-007) – Retroford

Does anyone know if there is any difference between Aus delivered N7's and those from over seas? Some local suppliers are saying they are different to Aus supplied models. I just cant imagine Mazda releasing two separate gearboxes for the same car in different markets.

Thanks
Kieran

Taff on FB in Adelaide ( 0882506838) has a few posts saying that also, that Aus  Mazda boxes that he uses are different from those used overseas, but not  exactly how. He advertises that he has them in stock ready to go.
Let me know Kieran if you end up going through with the replacement and you'ré open to selling the type 9.
I need something for my van project once I find a pinto.

thanks

Taff gets his from retro ford i believe, id hate to see the mark up hes providing for something anyone can order.

I think its ratios that are different and it does not mount at an angle like some. I believe scott from classic ford care knows the exact differences and he has told me but i cant remember.

bit of cut and paste here.

The NC was not sold with a 5speed option in Australia. In other words we only got the six speed in Australia and the N7 gearbox was never used here. So old mate is correct, the 5 speed boxes he’s selling are much stronger than the Australian ones because you could’t get one to suit a Duratec in an Australian car.

Thanks Robbie...
Keen to hear from anyone that has fitted one and whether any tunnel massaging is required..... I got the Type 9 in a manual tunnel with no chopping (apart from gearstick hole) so it would be good to do that again....
I also wonder about the gearstick location relative to the Type 9. I could look that up but just keen to hear first hand experience.

Hey Gents. Are we sure that Aus didn’t get any 5 speed mx5’s? I have an nc 6 speed, though seriously considering swapping it for the 5 speed just so I do t have to build such a large centre tunnel. I’m also keen for the room for a foot rest next to the clutch pedal

We did get 5pd mx5 Miata here in the older version, I think everyone is after the stronger box from the European mx5.
Sell me the 6sp only if it bolts to a duratec

Hey Marty
Apologies, I meant, that I was of the understanding that we had a 5 speed, a 6 speed and a 6 speed auto for the NC mx5.
I have been offered I believe an NC 5 speed as a swap for my 6 speed NC
