Really shouldn't be any excessive clearance, engine has just had full rebuild. Will try heavier oil but not optimistic.

Has anyone got an oil gallery plan for pinto, I took the filter off and turned motor over and had plenty of oil come through at the filter port.  I would presume that the next gallery outlet is where the oil sender unit is and there is very little oil on idle coming out of that port.
Is it possible to have a blockage in the oil gallery and if yes how would I remedy with motor is car?   Any suggestions gratefully received.
Ps forgot to say I replaced the filter in case there was an issue there but no change

Were the oil gallery plugs removed when the block was chemically cleaned?
If they are missing = no oil pressure.
There is another one at the rear of the block however would produce an external oil leak.

thanks blue474 that is an interesting point. I know all the welsh plugs were missing when the block came back.  Where are these oil gallery plugs, I cant visualise the section in the photo. Auxiliary shaft bearing?

You are correct it is the auxiliary shaft bearing.

dare say they would have taken all the plugs out of everywhere to clean. thats a good place to start looking.

15/40 wt oil should be fine, unless you bearings have too much clearance....

in answer to your question about dropping the sump. it can be done. i think, when i did it a really long time ago, i dropped the steering rack off and there was enough clearance. but i may have held the engine up and dropped the crossmember a little. cant remember exactly.

instead of turning the engine by hand or starting to test oil pressure, get yourself a 6mm socket on a long extension, take the distributor out and spin the oil pump using the socket on the end of a drill down the distributor hole. i used to do this all the time to pump oil around the engine before starting if it had sat for a while, or after i had the engine out.

Thanks Blue 74 - 'your blood is worth bottling' - pulled the front off the motor sure enough both plugs missing.  Will try and source some here in Brisbane and hopefully there will be an improvement in the oil pressure.👍

also thanks to Gaz, that is how I have been driving the pump ie small socket on the dizzy drive shaft.  Hopefully I wont have to pull the motor now🤞     Will let you know what happens when I have put the plugs in.

That's great news however I suspect you will be missing the plug from the rear of the block also. It probably didn't leak yet due to lack of oil pressure.
I would slip a piece of stiff wire (A piece of windscreen wiper stainless steel backing works well), down the oil gallery from the front oil gallery hole and measure the distance to the rear, If it is the same as the block length the plug is probably missing.
I have attached an rear image of the cylinder block for you to see the location.

I encountered this exact problem when I built my first Pinto back in the mid 80s. It's amazing how quickly it dumped all the oil out the back hole of the block into the flywheel and straight onto my driveway through the hole in the bell housing for the clutch fork.

And when I went to Ford to ask for the welsh plugs the bloke at the spare-parts counter told me no such part existed. I had to point them out to him on his microfiche.

Checked using the method suggested blue74 appears the back oil plug(ball) is in place.
Any suggestions where I might pickup a genuine oil gallery set of plugs. By my measurement one plug hole is 10mm+ the other 13mm + I purchased a 11mm plug from local engine rebuilder but it seemed to be too big and distorted when I tried to drive it home.
are the genuine ones an odd size?

Oil, oil glorious oil, spun the pump holding my fingers over the oil ports (finger in the dyke style) and a very slow drill speed had good oil pressure and oil squirting out of the cam spray bar.  Haven't been able to find plugs that fit yet but have ordered from Britain.
Thanks for all your help!
