Hi guys,
Are Capri door keys the same as the ignition key?
I have no ignition or door keys for my 72 V6. I Was wondering if there was a key type number on the door key barrel or ignition barrel to get new keys made. Not sure whether my door handles are the original matching ones to car and wasn't keen on taking the ignition mechanism apart as its the  72 model and I would have to 'easy out' the 2 screws that are snapped off when they make the car to prevent theft. Looking for the easiest solution.  Thank you.

If you’re worried about the tamper proof ignition mechanism bolts, you can still buy new ones (although, probably cheaper than this guy): https://www.ebay.co.uk/it...amp;fromMakeTrack=true

You can swap out just the key barrel from what I know. The door and boot are a different key to ignition anyway. Their is a code stamped on the back of the door and boot barrels.

Thanks guys. Thanks for offer Bernie am in Sydney. Will update profile. I was not worried about maintaining the tamper bolts its just that knowing me I probably would do more damage trying to get them out.

I’ve gotten ne down this road with my 72 and if I can remember the lock barrel doesn’t come out it’s attached to the column. I snapped my only key and had to firstly find a blank after going to 5 locksmith ,found an old guy who was into old small fords.
Then got mobile locksmith out to do his best to get a key made to suit lock.
Was successful but t.b.h u can start most old fords with your finger nail.

As Matt said, a finger nail will start most Capris.
With my 70 & 72 cars, one key can do everything for both cars - ignition, doors & boot.
Cheers, Ian

Ignition barrel does come out, but it’s much easier with the entire mechanism removed from the column. I have some photos from when I last did it, so I’ll try and dig them out.

i have to agree with hotboost , I remb back in the late 70's early 80's with my first Capri , my mates 76 celica keys opened both my doors and boot and even started my car ! , without rhe need to even " jiggle" his Key , ir also seemed that tour own Capri key could open and start anyone elses  capri, tgus i was jept busy fitting " kill switches" to all my mates Escorts , Capris and Cortinas !!

Thanks guys. I know I can open my doors and boot with anything but my ignition I am unable to. I will try first with a whole lot of other keys before pulling it apart . cheers.
