Hi all,
Has anyone on the forum done gas bonnet struts for an Mk 2 RS. or know of a link to show setup by someone else?  Some stuff on Google for standard Mk 2 but RS bonnet is much heavier and different under frame setup. I am considering a setup similar to Capri stuff I have seen online.  My local gas strut guy has suggested A really long one going from near the strut tower to one of the ribs out in the middle of the bonnet. Will probably work but doesn't look very good. Any suggestions, pearls of wisdom??
Cheers, Len

Hi Len. I'm assuming you would need a strut each side as the bonnet tends to flex a fair bit?

Yes, that's right Paul, apart from providing strength and stability it looks much better with 2. I am thinking of a bracket bolted to the top plate where it bolts to the bonnet, and having a bracket welded to a mounting ring around the strut top, similar to the ones to mount a strut brace- probably in 6 or 8 mm alloy. I would maybe use laser cut 3mm plate that's bolts to the strut mount as you suggested. Have a mounting point bent up at 90deg and then it should retain the original mounting hardware used to secure the strut top.

Only issue is the RS bonnet is considerably heavier than the standard one.

I assume you're thinking similar to this?

Yes, I should be able to get some aluminium plate and get it cut locally, my nephew is a fitter/ turner. My strut top has a ring around it so I will have a template to work off.  I tried the method as shown on the Turbosport thread but won't do the job. Luckily I had a spare set of hinges cleaned and painted so I can swap out my " swiss cheese " ones for our big car show at the end of this month Len

Won't do the job - bonnet too heavy?

Do you know the measurements required for a strut to work within the hinge as per the Turbosport posts? You can get custom struts made although they're prob standard lengths but pressures are a variable.

My local strut guy got me some struts about the right length but weren't able to support the weight, even with a fair bit of pressure. I am going to take some measurements and check some at the wreckers - focus hatches etc.  I think the Capri setup will work but the Escort bonnet is a lot shorter so would have to have shorter struts. The universal link will be handy, thanks Paul, in the event I can't find anything local to match my requirements, also measurements of what you can source too, Whools would be a help. Cheers, Len
