Thanks Ron and Mark,
re.........
Z9 OIL FILTER ADVOCATED TO TAKE PLACE OF Z38 interesting since the anti-drainback valve only works on INCOMING OIL, leaving the filter's centre OUTGOING area cleaned oil, to drain back into the galleries, resulting in an empty Z9, which, according to Ryco and Ford, starves the engine on Start-Up plus creates a risk of an "air-lock" or the oil pump's inability to "prime" the lubrication system if left long enough. The "shield/dam" inside the Z38 is meant to avoid any risk; by keeping the Filter (Z38) full of oil.
Looks like the above must be true in theory only, as nobody has reported any problems ?!
Maybe the oil doesn't drain back via the "un-protected" centre hole due to "hydraulic lock" ?
NB.....is it possible that no-one has noticed a "shorter" engine life due to "dry" starts ???
I'm not risking it, and always use a Z38, as I've seen too many compromises end in tears. My clients would expect no less.
All world wide Filter makers, inc Ryco & Ford UK, would not have "tooled up" to make a Z38 if there wasn't a valid reason. As a Mechanical Engineer, I have to agree with them that Z38 is fully valid and correct.
NB..........I noticed my OIL PRESSURE Guage jumps to 65 psi as soon as I start cranking, and BEFORE engine fires up !
Cheers guys
Bernie
PS..........I went to the Mornington race Course last weekend to the AOMC Inc All-Makes day, and was very sad to see not a single Ford Capri to be seen...........ah well, next time hopefully
