Hello all, got a solid two days in this weekend,
Finished test fitting the taillights during the week, slow job, fit, check, remove, tweak, fit *repeat*. Happy with the panel gap now though.
Big day on Saturday, two mates on hand, borrowed a crane and plucked the engine and box like a giant skill tester. Had a good look at the bulkhead for the first time in a while, its cactus, ordering the replacement panels now to go in asap. Moved on to what we could do in the meantime on Sunday, cleaned up all the holes in the inner wings, mainly holes I'd drilled for electric pumps and the like, as you can see it was a tight squeeze in there with helmet on a welder in hand
Looking for diagrams on where to unpick the bulkhead panels this week..........

Another Saturday well spent....... Ordered my bulkhead panels this so the car budgets blown for a couple of weeks...
Still plenty to do though, cleaned out the engine bay, it was all good when I first built it 16 years ago but I found layers of dirt like a timeline. Reminants of the great oil leak of '98, red dirt from numerous rally Australia's and white sand from that time I stupidly drove it on the beach, haha!
Welded out the holes from the bonnet pins and made the brackets for the electrical kill switch. Ended up fitting the seat and mounting the bracket and rip cod within easy reach. Trying to go largely original but thought this trick would be a worthwhile insurance policy.
Back in the garage today sorting through a few bits today for powdercoat, paint or repair......

Only got half a day in this weekend, battery cut off is welded and working, turns off a treat. Getting better at spot welding although it'll all be under the carpet..........
It's verge side collection in my suburb at the moment so a couple of old bmx's gave up their cable guides, even got a threaded one for the cable end

Chipped away at the car for a few hours this weekend, finished cleaning up the wiring, it runs down the chassis rail now so welded in the tabs to hold it,  welded the old wiring holes, rear arch too and made a makeshift strut brace before taking any material out of the bulkhead ahead of patching and replacing. We've nick named the car 'The Rotten Lemon'
Starting to find a painter, visiting a few shops this week..........

Spent the morning cleaning up a few welds and then started what we thought would be the most harrowing bit of welding so far, the bonnet, Its a beaut, straight and rust free but someone (me) drilled holes in it for bonnet pins a few years back.
All went well though, cleaned it to fresh steel and then with a block of aluminium underneath welded it first go with no warping or blow holes, stoked

It's been a couple of Saturdays out of the garage working for the man to help fund my new panels.....
Back into it today though, drivers footwell is done, had to make it in three pieces to get the bends right, most of the day was spent trimming, beating, welding then repeating, needs a grind on the outside will do that in the evenings, not too fussed about under the carpet...
Working on the bonnet during the evenings too, dents came out no worries, ground the bonnet pin welds they took a tiny smear of bog to finish....
Stay tuned, no work tomorrow either so the passenger footwell is next

Got the passenger side done today, once again in three pieces to get the bends right. Got some grinding to do during the week though. Satisfying job, my panel beating and weldings getting better and I've saved a ton of money, almost fainted when I saw the price of a whole new bulkhead, although it hasn't been painless, haha got plenty of holes in me from hot metal falling down my sleeves, in my boots and hair

Now that you have done those repairs, i think you should come and do nearly all the same to my yellow 2dr RS....uncanny how they all seem to suffer the same fate!!
