The guards r not a seamless fit - u have to work for it. Strength wise - I don't think there's a prob - a couple of guys have had v8's engineered with them on. One of my cars was run into a brick gate post - impacted one of his bonnets. It flexed downward on the nose and bounced back - albeit with gel cracking. I've bolted his guards on with stainless steel button heads

great thread Spud, I wish I have the talent you guys have got, and the guts just to pick the cars apart and rip into it.

Thanks deano - I'm itching to get some colour on it - a seminal moment for me on this one

Hi Spud 15
When restoring my 70 Deluxe I could not find a decent steel guard anywhere so I settled for a fibreglass one. I am very happy with the end result & it is very difficult to detect.
My two bobs worth on how it was done is on my blog (Parts 9, 10 & 11) at

Wow - looks good and from the pic in part 13 - the glass guard looks cleaner than the passengers steel one. I tried to sikaflex mine on to - left the clamps on for 48 hours - but when I took the clamps off, the guards fell off - so I chucked a wob and bolted them on.

I'll only use glass if both original guards are cheesy. I have a few nice steel guards but decided to save them ( and bonnets) for a rainy day. I have a red v6 that will be "glassed" - the candy apple, orange and reef green ones will be steel.

a coat of clear and the engine bay, boot area, jambs etc and underside of the bonnet and bootlid are done. Ill fit everything off, get it going and drive it down to the greenhouse where I can see it better - and do the external faces of the panels
