Been running the carbs unadjusted for a couple weeks now, according to the spark plugs the mixture looks good, however I was getting some backfire through the carbs on deceleration, or cold engine with light revs... I have adjusted the slide needle circlips down one from the middle and everything seems tops in the driveway, no backfire it all... It looks like they control the fuel mixture through all circuits so I'm about to take it for a spin and see if its all good. Still waiting on gunson colourtune, also a wideband meter is on the way for some serious tuning :)

Check out this document, proves very helpful for bike carb newbies...

Hi Matt,

Looking at doing a bike carb conversion in the near future. This is a great comprehensive guide to fit them.

A few questions, I know the pre -2001 r1 are the choice of carbs for this conversion, did you consider any other carbs with larger diameters than 40mm with the r1s? Also do you have any close photos of how the fuel pump was mounted and plumbed?

Thanks

Hey Mate, the only bike carb I know that is bigger than 40mm is 42mm but he bike escapes me at the moment. It's some 1300 beast though.  The R1's have been proved to flow as much as a standard 45 DCOE Weber so for my application (standard engine) they are perfect.

I am having a race engine built and I will then be using 48 DHLA Dellorto's as the R1's would have run out of puff at the power levels we are expecting.

I mounted my fuel pump in the engine bay but I keep meaning to move it next to the fuel tank as they push better than they pull.  From memory I used a coil bracket to mount it.

Let me know if you have any other questions

Cheers

Thanks for the info. The bike you are thinking of would it be a Honda CBR1100X (blackbird) gen 1 97-99? I think they came out with 42mm inlets? As I think the gen 1 hayabusa' came out with efi?

Yes, that is the one.

Is it a standard engine?

It's a slightly worked motor nothing to wild and crazy has been done to it. Would the 42mm carbs off a blackbird be better suited to a heavily worked motor where the r1 carbs are more suited to a standard or less wild motor?

The R1's are good on a Pinto up to about 180bhp and then you'll need the Blackbird ones or 45/48 Weber / Dellortos.  But if you have the Blackbird ones use them.

Here is a thread I started over on Turbosport where one of the guys compared the R1 Carbs to a 45 Weber.  http://www.turbosport.co.uk/showthread.php?t=279337

Cheers
