hi all my first time all im new and am looking desperatley for some help i own a 91 ford sapphire 2.0 gli, it gives me a starting problem in the mornings she starts up fine a runs well apart from a sometimes erratic idle or high idle  but after a short run she wont start up she has a very powerful swing and spark but she catch on. i have checked the fuel pump it seems to be working fine cos she doesnt cut off when running at high speed  140/160km/h  however when she does not start a little bit of fuel squirted into the intake and she fires up perfect.

any help or suggestions
spark plugs changed
fuel filter changed
all contacts to injectors checked
throttle body cleaned
idle valve cleaned
power feed to fuel  100%  also tried direct power to run pump continuos still wont start
plug leads as well as coil changed

Sorry I do not know the model car but what you descibe sounds fuel pump related.  When it does not start try the pump flow into a bucket.

Hi can you give us some more information about the car, is it a DOHC and has it the L Jetronic system on it, any other info will help as there were a lot of different engines and fuel management systems we need to know this so that we can assist you to sort it out, Just be aware that none of these models were released for sale over here so not many people would know about them
Thanks Dave

its a pinto sohc 8v 2.0 injection the intake just has EFI stamped on what i have done is copied a pic of bretts sapphire (pls forgive me brett) so maybe a visual will help
i have read somewhere it says to test fuel rate/pressure without a guage is to crank engine for 30 secs with main fuel rail feed placed into a bottle if after 30 sec you get 3.5 litres of fuel your pump should be at proper delivery rate and pressure i did it for 15sec and got out about 1.25litre so im not too far off, as for engine specs you guys have the 2.0 16v my block is exactly the same except my head is an 8v single cam same type engine you would find in the cortina mk4 and 5 carb version

Test the fuel pump when you have the problem...  you need to test the pump not off the main rail feed but disconnect the return line to the fuel tank from the regulator -  therefore you are testing the pump under correct pressure.

If you got 1.25lt in 15 seconds with no reg connected (i.e. taken off the main rail feed as you said) you may still have a problem.  I am assuming your car has the fuel reg after the fuel rail as per cossies.

yes thats correct mines is a sealed unit though the pressure cannot be alter, what do you say would be the correct amount it should pump  unfortunately i cannot get my hands on a fuel pressure gauge its kinda of an expensive tool in south africa especially if you only gona use it once

i was browsing through the forum  in the parts for sale section there is a guy that has a pinto turbo head for sale i not too much trouble take a look a the pics mine is the exact same head and EFI injection setup  but without a turbo maybe that would help clarify what engine i have

As said remove the return line to the tank and measure the flow.....  3.5 lt per 30 seconds at no pressure (as you said taken from the fuel rail feed) is not a good test of whether the fuel pump is OK.  FWIW a bosch 044 pump (enough fuel to support 500HP) will flow 4.5lt per 60 seconds as measured from the return line to the tank (with a standard reg pressure 3 bar).

Testing the fuel pump as you have suggested does not test it correctly.

I would imagine your pump should flow 2 lts per 60 seconds if measured from the return line.
