So is there an approximate figure on how long products such as sta-bil will extend the life of a tank of fuel beyond the norm? Is sta-bil widely available? Is e85 likely to become widely available in the near future?

I know we have it at Autobarn, and if your local one doesnt they can get it easily for you.

Sta-Bil will keep the fuel fresh for 12 months when used at the correct dosage which is 30ml for every 10 litres of fresh fuel. It is available at Autobarn, AutoPro, Super Cheap, Repco and Burson stores.

E 85 will take a while longer to become mainstream but the latest commodore upgrade is setup to run on it.

iirc caltex is "flex fuel"

ie, 70-85% ethanol. great for the commodores, not for someone looking to tune on e85 specifically

So stupid question: Since e85 is limited in availability is it possible to mix your own? Metho or methylated spirit with 98 octane petrol or is there more to it?

I'd imagine there is a little more to it than that. The ethanol part is made from sugar cane here. In the US they make it from corn.

There are alot of people using E85 now around the hillclimbing family in Vic, and it has become a control fuel for varoius CAMS classes.

From my research I have noted the following:

As far as from the bowser goes I wouldn't trust it as it varies too much in blend, and it is also blended with 95 ULP from my research.

However, the stuff that the CAMS saloon car guys use is Blended with 98 ULP, and also contains all the anti corrosive agents required and from all reports works very well and also stores pretty well. It is far superior to the bowser variety.

I have looked at running it in my new engine. There are a number of factors you need to take into consideration.

Compression Ratio. If its low stick with 98 ULP, there will be little or no advantage in E85 unless you have the the compression to utilise it.

Cold start is a pain unless you have a very good cold start tune or well tuned carbs. Alot of guys still squirt ULP in to get their cars started.

Corrosion. Even though the the good E85 contains the anti rusting agents etc, over time it will still be a problem. Most people drain it and run ULP through the system after a race meet to prevent it, as you would with methanol.

All that asside, the guys I have spoken to running it absolutely love it, have had excellent results swapping over to it, and it smells great! Turbo engines love the stuff even better :)

Any ideas on how these guys are mixing up their own e85. From reading quite a bit the ethanol needs to be 'dry' or phase separation will occur and there are a few products around including the afore mentioned sta-bil. Some bowsers in the US just mix in line.

My interest comes from a budget blow thru turbo idea so no need to decompress na motor.
