Hi Guys, Advice required.
Have just rebuilt V6 capri heads / gaskets etc due to oil leaks etc. After putting all back together and running. The car now overheats after 5 minutes at idle. Never overheated before the pull down. Any suggestions on why?
Also, the car manual says to re-torque the cylinder head bolts again after reaching normal operating temperature. Is this done whilst engine is still warm/hot or when cold again or doesn't matter?  Thanks for the advice. PSR

What sort of head gasket did you use ? Depending on the type some don't need to be re-torqued.  What did the installation instruction for the head gasket say was required?  I thought heads were re-done cold . Len

Is fuel lean? Did you oil the head bolts before you installed them to get proper torque readings? Sounds like exhaust gas getting into water jackets. Does the temp gauge show it’s overheating or just water coming out the overflow from extra pressure.

I just used standard composite type gasket with sealant, oiled bolts before install. Torqued it up as specified no probs, its just that the manual stated to re-torque after reaching operating temp.         Temp gauge not working at this stage. Just water coming out of overflow and heating up and boiling out on cap removal. I did remove all water and heater hoses during rebuild. I wonder if some of the water jackets have been blocked or sealant got in during install. I did do all this and then left it for a month whilst overseas before trying to start it.

Head bolt torque was changed at some point to be tighter can’t remember the new figure. Also did you cut out the inlet manifold gasket to suit Oval port heads as they are set for D Port heads. 5 minutes is rather quick for over heating so check that radiator hose is squishy top and bottom when you get the problem. If top hose is hard as a rock then water jacket or thermostat problems. Also is it timed correctly?

Did not cut out oval port heads on gasket. just put it on and sealed  it up. That could be the problem, so that has to be done?  Car is tuned properly. Thanks all.

Not being familiar with the V6 but I know on V8 Clevelands if you put the head gasket on upside down or back to front it closes off water passages and will boil in 5 mins. Heads are identical but I didn’t reverse the head gasket when I reassembled the engine - novice mistake many years ago.

Yes must house out inlet ports on gasket as most suit the Dport motor. Creates a restriction on the oval port. Should not need to do anything else though.

I am no expert just learning as I go. Forgive my ignorance. I believe I have D port heads.          So if I understand. The Inlet Manifold is D port, the gasket is D port, the heads normally O Port. But if my heads are D port does that mean it all should link up.  Sorry if its a stupid question.  cheers PSR

How do you know you have D port heads. Most Capris here(and every car except 11specials) had oval port heads. Can you post some pics to be sure. I would say power would be slightly down because of it but should not cause overheating in five minutes.
The oval port has what looks like a 10 cent piece in front of the carb on the manifold. The Dport does not. The oval port has an offset fan the D port has it centered ( this could be changed though).
