I have a quote now for A pillars and rear wheel arch repair panels. One A pillar with delivery had a postage quote of $198 which seemed too expensive. I have another quote now for two A pillars and rear wheel arch repair at a more reasonable $248.
This however has a total price of $1150, so my question is for anyone who might know is will I be charged import taxes on the Australian side. I’ve been down this route a few times with second hand parts and been slugged massively. Or does it make a difference if the total cost with delivery is under $1000. Also would anyone be interested in 1 Apillar and share some of the delivery cost. Need real answers before I go ahead as the misses will shoot me if I’m wrong again. Thanks in advance.

No though Expressed has Apillar on sale at the moment for $306 aud. Great price at that but one would be $507 with delivery.

You will most likely get done for Tarriff and GST plus handling fee (would total about $300 AUD on your parcel).  Used to be under $1000 AUD was exempt, Ex_pressed wont give you a "doctored" invoice.  I did have joy once getting them to raise 2 invoices, 1 for the goods under 1000 and 1 for the freight that slipped through.  However Customs now charge you on the value of the goods, plus the actual cost of the freight as a total.  Try the split invoice method and see if it works

Last time i imported something, the delivery cost took it over $1000 and i got slugged taxes.
like gtv6capri said, you could try 2 invoices, but i found that companies don't like doing that.

I ask the question as I’ve bought stuff under $1000 with delivery and still had customs duty and god knows what else. A £300 pound gearbox with £150 pound delivery cost me in total $2600 and oh boy I was in **** from the other half. I really need one A pillar but at $198 delivery it seems a rought and not on Expressed part. The combination of other parts makes it attractive. So if my total invoice was under $1000 what will our government and authority be asking? Just don’t need an “I told you so“ from the better half again. If all I need to add is GST here I am fine with that. Customs duty storage packaging and fumigation are a killer.

Oh I also know two invoices or parcels in a short time from same person or company is checked by customs and you get slugged anyway.

There is no fumigation or anything, thats stuff that comes in random wooden crates or on old pallets.  Expressed use decent new cardboard boxes.  What will happen is that if your order is found to be over $1000, customs add the goods and freight total up and convert to AUD.  Then they add 5% to the total for Excise.  Next they add 10% to the new total for GST.  Finally there is a handling fee of about $120.

My last order was $2200 AUD landed.  I got hit with $395 in excise, GSt and Handling.

Looks like as long as Expressed Steel don’t sell more than $75k (Aus dollars) worth of product to Australia per year, they won’t have to collect GST on a purchase under $1000 (including freight). It also appears that Customs won’t charge GST on such a shipment once it gets here.

Anything over $1000 will always be charged GST by Customs. If Expressed went over $75k a year in sales to Australia, they’d be required to register with the ATO and collect GST on all sales to Australia. Depending on how much of a pain that was for them, they may choose not to ship here at all for smaller orders.

FWIW, I’m thinking about getting a bunch of repair panels before things get prohibitively expensive.

Cheers
Jamie
