G'day all, i currently have an auto escort that i'm doing up, but wanna put a manual in it. i understand the sierra and the 4 speed will bolt straight up to the block and use the same tail shaft, if i use the mounting plate from the auto will the 4 speed and or sierra bolt straight up or will have have to but and move the mounts?

sierra type 9 uses the Auto g/box rear mount...no moving involved.
type 9 fits well into the Auto tunnel! go with that!

you will have to cut abit out for the shifter to come thru in the type 9 also.

If your Escort motor is a crossflow, then you might have a problem with the sandwich plate between the block and the bellhousing. The hole for the sterter motor will be a few degrees out so will need trimming. If your motor is a Pinto then there will be no problem at all.

There are a couple of other issues....
The big auto tunnel doesn't leave you any room down the left hand side of the clutch pedal to rest your foot. I know - I did a tunnel conversion in 1984 and still compete in the car regularly!
You will need to weld the clutch sleeve bracket into the correct location on the firewall. And reinforce it as well.
And the motor will never be as crisp as an original manual due to the lower compression ratio - unless you give it a birthday and a new set of pistons.
And here is a must!! Replace the welsh plug at the rear of the spline on the drive yoke and use liberal amounts of silicone to seal it. Nearly always when we get an Escort in with a leaky extension housing seal it is actually the welsh plug come loose or leaking.

Forgot i wrote on here, but the motor will be a 2L manual from a doner car,it will be getting a bit of a freshen up and once its all rego-ed, it will most likely get a full overhaul and hotted up. well thats the plans anyways. I'm only a little fella with small feet so hopefully i will have enough room, if not, some gentle massaging with a 4 pound hammer sould do the trick! where the clutch cable goes through the fire wall how much reinforcing will it need? i can always cut out the one from the donor car (but i don't want to really cut into that its its a very nice shell) either way i'm a fitter/machinist i'm sure i can make something up.

Hi Daniel,

Another option is the Celica / Supra 5 speed.

They are stronger than the type 9 and you can get interchangable mounting positions for the gearstick to avoid cutting holes in the tunnel.

Cheers thaks for that Matt! i was originally going to go down that path as i local wreckers/rip offs has some reco-ed ones fairly cheap and some used ones even cheaper, but i though i would try and stay all ford. i'm still a bit off from having it on the road, just gathering ideas part info etc
