Hi everyone,

I had to completely destroy a nut that holds the door to the body of my Mk2 Escort (after much cursing and general aggro over the two hour it took to finally get it off), and I urgently need know what size the thread is so I can get a new one.  I thought it was M8, but they fit very loose on the bolt, my local hardware store doesn't have a thread gauge, and the speciality tool stores are shut on Sunday.  Does anyone know what they are, or better yet, have a spare?

Thanks in advance.

Should be M8.
5/16 UNC would be the next closest however would not be compatible with M8.
If you have had to fight to get the nut off check that the bolt thread is not damaged.
The nyloc or crimped nut should make it a little tight to get off but not difficult.

Interesting.  I bought an M8 and although it goes on without difficulty, it is rather loose.  The standard nuts seem so much tighter.  Perhaps I need to try an M8 nylock.  Thanks Peter.

If the nuts that are fitted to your door hinges are the original Ford nuts they should be "crimped". Not possible to see in your photo because it is blurred. "Crimped" meaning they are crushed slightly at the top of the nut. This will mean they are a tight thread and tight to wind on and will not become (hopefully) loose over time. Nyloc nuts will serve the same purpose.

They are original, but that begs the question whether they are single use only.  I ask because I wound the undamaged one in the photo on with just my fingers.

There should be no problem about reusing them provided they are not damaged or worn.
If they turn on with fingers might be a good idea to replace them.

I bought some M8 nylocs and they fit just fine.  Cheap enough to replace all eight too.  Thanks for your help.
