Hi
I have put a deposit on a 2ltr engine from an escort and im looking to put it in my 1600 mk2 "work van".
Just wondering if i got it at a fair price.
It is a 2 litre with twin side draught Dellorto carburettors , correctly choked and jetted , on a short  "Red - Line"  inlet manifold , with sports air cleaners , and the necessary linkages  as well as a nice set of extractors!
Engine was fully balanced, the head was ported and polished , and fitted with valves for " unleaded" fuel, a "fast -road-cam", and a heavy duty clutch. Heading down next week to see it running and run some tests on it.
Going to pay $1300 for it.

from what i have read the Serria T9 gearbox is a good fit. Can i use the bellhousing from my 4 speed?
Will run into any problems with doing this?
What are they worth second hand?
Can i use the 4speed shifter on the new T9 gearbox? Will it hit the Handbrake in 4th?
I have heard some T9 boxes are better than others, if there a differance at all?

Do i need the 2ltr struts/springs/shocks to take the weight of the bigger engine?
thanks a lot for any help. Graham.

Yes. That'll work.

Only if you consider cutting the floor to make a hole for the shifter to fit through and maybe having the adjust the size of the tunnel with a FBH as a problem.
What are they worth second hand?

plenty. I suggest getting one off smcka when he has one in stock

No chance.
Will it hit the Handbrake in 4th?

If you use the original sierra shifter, maybe. If you use a rattley quick shift, no.

Some of the later ones had a lower oil capacity.
Simplest solution is to get the 2 litre all fitted up and running with the std 4 speed and then figure out if you need or want a 5 speed.

Hey, thanks heaps for the reply!
"adjust the size of the tunnel with a FBH" whats a FBH?

I have only ever had 4 speed boxes so im very keen to get a 5 speed.

What happens to the center console when i move the shifter hole back.
does it still look ok or is it well out?

My guess is "B" stands for BIG and "H" stands for hammer.  I'll leave the "F" up to you ...

Here's some reading for you. If those kind of mods don't stress you out, go for it.

http://rsmotorsport.com.au/files/Type9toMk2.pdf

Measure 70mm from the current manual gear stick location back toward the handbrake. That's where the 5 speed will pop out and should tell you if it will foul the standard centre console.

I'd certainly want 2L struts to take the extra weight of the pinto you intend to fit. See if you can find a rusty wreck and grab the complete front end then swap the whole lot across. Just pay attention to the passenger side strut. For some reason Escorts all seem to have been whacked in the front left and this quite often leads to a bend in the tube near the base of the strut.

Thanks heaps for that!

I’m going to grab a steering rack (i need a new one, got the wobbles) and the front struts.

Is there anything else that is different between the 1600 and 2ltr other than how the radiator sits and the front struts?

Is the rear leaf setup the same?

And I’m in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, does anyone know if i have to get everything engineered?

Or because I’m putting an engine that did go in the same van from factory its ok?

Dunno about rear springs on vans. Never owned one.
The rear diff ratio is different between 1600 and 2L. The front panel has a cutout at the bottom to fit the bigger 2 litre radiator.
If you're worried about engineering something, i'd avoid the 5 speed conversion.
