Hi all, was wondering if anyone is familiar with the best way of changing this bearing. Haynes manual says to use a press to remove the old one and insert the new one. I have also read where a little heat can be used to heat up the alloy cover to drop out the old one and insert the new one. There is also the hub to take off the old bearing and fit on the new one. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Press is the only way. You might also need heat not to break it. Lots of soaking in the likes of Wd40 with a few!!!

The replacement bearings available need a trimming down of the shaft as they are longer

The end that goes into the timing cover? I can see on the one I have just purchased the shaft at that end extends past the outer housing by approx 2.5mm. Should it be flush, a lathe would be the best way to get an accurate finish I suppose? Sorry about all the questions!!

Hey Guys, I'm a new member looking for a restoration project, had a Mk1 1970 back in the late 70's early 80's....
I also have spent my entire working life in the bearing industry BTW, it been a real long time since I changed out that fan bearing, I have a distant memory that , the bearing had a wire clip  or circlip, that needed to be extracted first ,
my books tell me the ford number was 2720E8626A, the RHP No. ( the actual manufacturer) was (  or should be !) FPS396, Which I doubt very much you will find, there was a "soft shaft" universal version available, where the bearing inner race ( which is the shaft) is only hardened on the ball track, hence you can cut / trim the excess, much better to get a machinist to do,
if you cant find one, sing out and i'll see if i can round one up for you - but I'm in Perth
Cheers

Hi Brad1959 having someone around with bearing knowledge could be really handy :-)

When you get your project would be good to see some pics.  Hopefully you can rescue one before the idiots that are more interested in chopping them up to sell as parts get to it.

Hey GTV6,
Couldn't agree more, I'm most definatley interested  in rebuilding to - or close to original specs.
My Old girl was what I chose to call show / stock specs, IE looked the goods but just few subtle improvements ( in my eyes)

6" rims 205mm tyres, mild cam, thermatic fan ( best thing you could do to the Essex), Holley 500 jetted down ( The 40mm Weber had gear wear issues), slight overbore of course,  GT40 Coil, 1 3/4" straight through Lukey ( did away with the silly right hand turn over the axle ) and chromed everything I could lay my hands  on under the hood. The old girl went like a scalded cat I'm pleased to say.
I'm currently looking at collecting parts as I come across them, If there cheap enough getting 2- 3 of rather than the one of, view to flogging off any extras to the "fraternity"
Cheers
Brad
