I ordered a Megasquirt ecu aswell as other goodies from USA. Apart from having to pay gst\tariff i'm being asked the following question :
ARE THESE GOODS ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS WHICH CONTAIN SULFUR-HEXAFLUORIDE (SF6)?  YES OR NO?    IF YES:   WHAT IS THE  ODS OR SGG LICENCE NUMBER?

I've contacted the supplier just waiting on a response. Just a pain in ass! Could anyone answer this?

I had a similar question aimed at me recently.
I answered "no".
The customs goon stared at me thinking not to believe me.
So I quickly retaliated and fired a question back at her - "Do you have firm evidences or particulars that the components do in fact contain the chemical?"
It all became too hard for her and the shipment was processed without further question.
 
The question you have been asked most probably could not be reliably be answered by the Megasquirt manufacturer.
Electronic components are usually sourced from all over the world (often China) and only assembled by the end (Megasquirt) manufacturer (.....often China) who would have little idea, nor care about of the exact chemical composition in each and every individual component.
 
I your case I would simply answer "no".
 

 
 

Yeah I contacted the megasquirt supplier and they said no, so I passed the message on. I'm just kicking myself now, I should have bought all the bits separately. I paid $1177 and had to pay $189 in GST etc.

Ouch.. yeh sometimes you can get stuff through over $1000.. but its safer to stick under.

SF6 is used as an insulator in high voltage electrical components (not electronics), amoung other things. You need an import licence for bulk imports of this, so I'd say small amounts wouldn't matter. This seems to be supported by an info sheet I found on the Customs website: http://www.customs.gov.au...heticGreenhouseGas.pdf

The last para on the first page states "To assist in identifying the volume and breadth of imported fire and electricity equipment and aerosols using SF6, an information only Community Protection question will be required to be answered upon lodgement. The answer to this question will not impede the clearance of the goods."
