Hey Everyone!

Have a 1974 Mk1 now for 12 months and I've decided that life is never going to slow down enough for me to start doing to this car what I want - so I'm going to start anyway!

Its running an unknown 1600cc engine, 4 speed manual and its in 'reasonable' condition. I've always wanted an Escort, and its a 'mid-life crisis' of sorts that prompted its purchase. As a significant birthday approached I sold a tuned Mk5 Golf GTI, went back to uni, have started growing my hair long (again), and bought an old Escort. I've not yet started listening to the Sex Pistols though...

I've been driving the car as a daily for the past 12 months and its been super reliable. Other than a broken clutch cable, I've topped it up with oil, some brake fluid and a dash of coolent and she's peaches. Even in summer, there's no histrionics or drama's in the heat - at least not from the car :)

On the agenda is a full body resto, an SR20DET, sequential gearbox etc. I want to track the car (a bit) and hillclimb (a bit) but also keep it road legal (a bit) :D

I want to get things done quickly too - I don't this to be a 4 year project. I live in a small house with no shed, I have two cars and no room for a third so I want to keep driving the Escort as much as possible. Ideally I'd love to buy another, modern daily. I'd also love to have a supermodel girlfriend but it seems life is all about compromise.

I've never built a car before. So I've no idea where to start. I no doubt will be getting alot of work done at various workshops is Adl! Starting with the motor first - I was thinking about picking up a front cut Silvia (or similar) for the transplant. But before that I'd need to do the transmission tunnel to accommodate the Silvia 5 speed?? (Sequential box comes later).

So first job job would be new tunnel. And while we're on it new floor panels as the existing floor has rust through (see pics). Sounds pretty straight forward eh??

If you go harry hacking the cars tunnel and firewall about, be sure you may have engineering issues that need to be legal.
I personally am in the process of rectifying a butchered tunnel and firewall where "some one" fitted a 4AG in a mk1 escort.
If you love the Ford Escort then find a Ford Engine is my opinion. But I am only one person with my thought.  Others may support your engine managment thoughts.
Just don't lose sight of the end of the tunnel while under going your restoration, there is nothing worse than a unfinished project. Good luck

Yeah I've agonized over engine choice for quite a while. Would love a YB with a Cosworth head, but they're expensive when compared to an SR20. While I'm not after mega-power, having seen how simply (and cheaply) serious power can be achieved from an SR with only minor mods its hard to go past. And besides, every mechanic in town knows how to rebuild an SR...

CamMk1... I've never built a car before. So I've no idea where to start....

Start at one end and work towards the other.  Worked for me!!!

What state are you in? (if you are reliving your youth then perhaps quite a drunk one)  Suggest you carefully investigate your State's laws and regs regarding engine and other swaps and, as suggested before, determine what engineering certificates you need.

How would the sequential gearbox go in a daily street driven car?

Good luck

"Hey, look at that
Just wait and see
Worked hard and saved my dough
I buy that car and then I roll up with joe
Get me that girl and we go ridin' around
We look real sharp with the wide top down"

In SA, so I've been looking at the other SR20's on here with quite some interest! Seems like a lot of members from SA...

My neighbor has a Puma Clubman with a sequential box which he uses semi-regularly - he has a fused ankle so cant use a clutch. Its expensive, and frankly unnecessary (for me) but they are oh so cool.

Well......If we are on a Sex Pistols theme......How about Project Vacant?

I like it. Was thinking Project Vicious! lol, maybe not...

A Silvia front cut can be had for 3k with a reasonable motor, all the electrics, plumbing, front brakes etc.

That'll leave enough money left over off post engine swap to pull the engine back out and give it a freshen up with some head work, cams etc.

Whats the cost of a zetec motor here in Aus?

ratta tat tat
About $300 for a silvertop
Double that for a black top
