Paul could you outline how you would get the 170hp,thats about an extra 35 to 40hp right?
I was toying with the idea of a pinto with around the 150hp mark to keep it hassle free and reliable.
A 170hp zetec would'nt be straining to much at all would it?

Cams and some headwork will see a Zetec to 170hp pretty comfortably, and reliably (I'm assuming thats the engine you meant!), assuming it has either webers or a decent inlet with injection.

Cheers,
Woz

EDIT: Sorry Paul, just noted that was a message for you!

Fords new 1L Turbo is quoteded to have 125bhp.
I'm wondering if the standard 4 speed will bolt up?

With more torque than a factory fresh 2.0 Pinto, and no doubt a sizable weight saving too.  Not such a nutty transplant as the engine volume might suggest.

given that its heaps newer would it tech take less to get big power out of a zetec even if Forced

also, can 'ecoboost' engines be found in australia?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecoboost
ford 2L ecoboost 2010 ->  200 hp (149 kW) at 5500 rpm, 221 lb·ft (300 N·m) at1750-4500 rpm
ford 2L ecoboost 2011 -> 237 hp (177 kW) at 5500 rpm, 250 lb·ft (339 N·m) at 1750-4500 rpm

no doubt price heavy, but comparative at all?

If your looking at 200hp+ then id be looking at Duratec which again is a further step up from the Zetec with much more advanced head design etc.. Similar sort of instal costs. Just the engine is usually slightly higher in price because its newer. Though you can find bargains if you look.
Only thing i see going for the zetec rather than the Duratec.. Is they make that uber cool BDA replica rocker cover only for the zetec

I was to the understanding that a Duratec conversion is somewhat more complex to do than a Zetec conversion due to the height??

I would put it like this

if you want:
up to 190hp stick with the Pinto.
190-220hp Zetec
220hp+ BD, YB or Duratec

You can simply buy a modified wet sump (or dry setup if your into that). Other than that its basically the same things you need to do besides the gearbox which you can't use type9 straight unto it. Most use rx7 or mx5, some use type9's with a bell housing to suit but they spend big money getting the gearbox strong enough. Might as well just buy an rx7 box which is plenty strong.

The Zetec BDA rocker cover is just so nice though.. makes me want to do the Zetec over the Duratec purely so it has that!!

Id go Zetec, use the std 2.o zetec clutch / flywheel and swap the sump for a modded Escort type(Mondeo) and water rail, Extrators from anywhere in uk, engine mounts can be made easily. Bike carbs or Weber 45's will see 160bhp , more power is cams/pulleys from USA, cheap, direct bolt in and they work great gets 185+bhp.
 I have a built up Zetec which is good for 225bhp, though it will be running on LPG !!
