Hey guys, im currently building up my mk2 escort, and was looking into 4link conversions so far i have put a BW 8.3/4" rear diff in it and am running koni yellow shocks and single leafs, i was looking into the 4link path after seeing a few kits, the big question i have is why when 4linking does everyone insist on putting turrets and long coil over style shocks in the rear end? the rear travel in an escort cannot be anywhere near the length of the coil over shock can it?

Rear turrets were designed for rally cars requiring a lot of travel.

Also the bottom shock mount is usually moved to the top of axle tube.

ok, so in theroy when doing a 4link conversion you could retain the bottom shock mount and use ladder bar style short coil over shocks instead of turreting and adding extra weight and work?

Link bars will be in the way of the original shock mount.

Matty - I found the below link an interesting read, it might answer a few of your question

Having done a degree myself I can say Damion Parkin definitely deserves his degree after the work he's put in on that Escort setup dissertation.

I'm in the same boat as Matty. I have a Mk2 that Im thinking I should 4link. Cept mine is a 4 door.

I just have a few questions for the people in the know.
After reading the article posted above it seems that bars of the same length parallel and horizontal or a few degrees down is the most ideal set up for ... is this correct? or do i need to read it again.

Can i install turrets angled backwards a little bit so that the back part of the seat is able to fit?

Do i require a watts link?

And because im sure someone will ask the car has no engine at the moment it was going to have a pinto and then i wanted to change to a cosworth, but the project is taking so long cause im at uni im thinking that i should just skip the pinto. I would like to make 250-300rwhp.

I can make a new topic if you think its necessary.
Cheers
