Starting to look at the brake setup for my tarmac rally car.

I will be using 15" rims of unknown type so I am assuming that I will be able to get between 300 and 330mm disks. Does the brand of rim make a difference to the size of brakes that can be fitted? What size disks are other 15" rim users running?

AP and Alcon both do kits with 304mm disks.

Has anybody read, written or know about the differences between these two setups? Is one better than the other??? Certainly one is more expensive and although youoften get what you pay for I am not interested in paying for brandnames and bling. I want facts.

Also, is it essential to use the AP/Alcon rotors or would generic DBA rotors suit? I am thinking teh DBA might not stand up to the punishment they would get???

I run 285mm discs in Performance brand and Viper Turismo 15" rims. In both rims, I have more than 10mm clearance between the caliper and rim, so will upgrade to 302mm discs next time which should leave me a few mm clearance.

I use Mazda Series 4/5 calipers and my understanding is that the more competition oriented calipers give you even more clearance.

I need to have the shell complete in order to determine the rim type/offset in order to determine the brake size and type.....ahhhhh

With rim clearance, is the only issue generally the clearance around the radius of the rotor/caliper or are there often clearance issue from the side of teh caliper to the mounting face of the rim? I suppose extreme offsets might cause an issue? What I am getting at is that maybe I could work out the rim type/brand I want then just work out the offset later thus allowing me to buy the brakes now....

WOuld have thought that both of those are premium brands so would go for the best price.

DBA disks have been very good in mine and friends cars - track day cars (Sandown, Phillip Island and Winton) - no warping so far. Having said that DBA may not be much cheaper to buy than sourcing AP disks from UK.

GRP4 Fabrications do an AP brake kit for 15" wheels. Looking at that at the moment....

I have APs 4spots with DBA 5000 296mm rotors! The DBAs were 1/3 of the price of AP discs but twice the weight so I think thats the trade off. The AP Calipers were approx $2200 and are brilliant!!!

Do you know the AP caliper code so that I can refer to them on the AP website?

Still undecided on direction although I think money will limit me to AP Racing gear.

I will have some 266mm 13" AP brake kits up for sale soon (NEW KITS-UNUSED). If interested.
