I was wondering if anyone knew much about these and what's involved in doing a conversion from standard to HID. about 2 years ago i enquired about it and it was going to cost me about $350 installed for the kit.

Has anyone done a conversion themselves?

Does anyone know where to get a kit cheap?

Cheers Rhys

there one's like this.

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/HID-Conversion-Kit-H4-High-Low-dual-Beam_W0QQitemZ190319000898QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Car_Parts_Accessories?hash=item2c4fe57d42

But you can also get them cheaper again. Kits around $100.

I have HID spotlights on my Patrol and they are well worth the money. Steer clear of the cheap ones as they won't last. Also, check with your local RTA about whether or not your allowed them. In vic we are not allowed to chenge our headlights to HID. cheers Kieran

That's crazy how they stop you from upgrading to a better quality headlight. I'll ask an auto electo if im allowed on the esky. I dont know how much the cheap ones are vs the expensive ones. does $200 sound cheap or average?

$200 sounds about average and probably will be OK. they won't let you have them due to some self leveling of the light or something like that not exactly sure. My kit was close to $400 but that was 18 months ago so would probably closer to $300 now and I have managed to kill 1 of the external ballasts but thi sis due to the car and the way it gets used > Lifted patrol with 35" tyres doing 100+ KM/h on private property and dirt roads been almost an everyday thing tends to shake them to death.

Thanks Kizza, I think it may be best to ask the auto electrician before i go buying anything.

ive put a HID kit on the escort, its awesome, but highly illegal. newer cars that have HID have self levelling headlights, so they sense when the rear of the car is loaded up, and they change the angle of the headlight to counter this. about 25% of cars that go past my car normally flash me thinking my high beams are still on, when i put my toolbox in the back, weighing down the back, lifting the headlights angle up, about 75% of cars coming past felt they were too bright.

its the easiest comversion you could think of. mine came with a plug and play harness. as long as you have un-sealed beams. you just unplug the current globes, put the new ones in, mount the modules, plug it all in, then run the provided wire to the battery for + and - and your away.

And that's why those kits are illegal. Too bright for opposite traffic as the driver is blinded, which could lead to an accident. If the car travelling in the opposite direction (or in front of ya) happenes to be a cop, and pulls ya over to check, your bank balance will be hit very hard. Plus a full RWC inspection and a coloured piece of paper on the screen.
