So I noticed an interesting comment from Whooligan on another post :

A Perana is pretty much my ultimate Capri. Good price although I wouldn't expect it to stay at that price as soon as the bids start rolling.
Unfortunately I would have to sell pretty much everything I own to buy one and then I would be too scared to drive it.
So, I guess I would have to revise that comment to read my Ultimate Capri would be a Perana "Tribute" which I could modify slightly without annoying the purists and not fear loosing it to a hapless driver in an accident.

I too would love to own a Perana, and having South African connections in the family I think it would be a nice tribute, my love of the Capri with a connection to her past - win win :-). A friend of mine owned a Perana and it was without doubt very exhilarating - my issue with them is, what is the difference between any Capri body shell, painted yellow and black with a 302 and all the required fruit - does this make is a Perana ? As far as I know there is no real register to say what is real and what is fake. I know there are a few tags here and there which is meant to clarify it as original - but really quite easy to replicate.
Case and point - my friends Perana, which was truly awesome, was a 4cyl shell - was it real? was it fake ? that was the question he was asked at most car shows - the answer of course was always, "yes its an original" - but I was never convinced...

I though this topic was worthy of its own thread as I have always been intrigued - i'd be interested in any other thoughts

cheers Paul

As with the V6 and 4cyl their are differences with the Perana. As many would know the crossmember is different with reversed steering rack but their are other structural mods that let you know.
These aren't advertised but signs from which a genuine Perana can be picked from a fake.
They are much harder to fabricate a fake from than a 4 cyl to V6 swap.
The Perana also has a different setup to what a V8 conversion would and drive differently( not really better)
I do love them they to me are the ultimate.

I agree, the thing that puts me off is not knowing if it is an original .. Peranas keep on popping up.
The RS clubs know every RS in existence including the rumoured re shells!
A 302 in a Capri is a fabulous combination - with the Windsor and the C4 the weight went up by 20kgs over a  V6 manual .. in my experience it does throw out the balance., it feels like a heavier car though it really isn't.
Are there issues with registering Peranas in NSW these days. Not being a 'factory' car ?

No issues with rego as it's not a conversion. All you need is the import paperwork and a blue slip.

I see no reason why these Peranas aren't selling here. I bought mine off the same seller and at $34000 that car looked like a decent example. Work in progress I agree and far from original maybe.
What I did learn from my experience buying mine was that once it's a Perana our laws don't apply. You could put any V8 motor in it and change it however you like and you don't need any engineering as long as fullfills the ADR as of 1970 etc. For me I love my V6 but I adore my V8 which is the Perana and so much is my ultimate Capri. They are the most powerful standard Capri ever made and sold to the public and I would have two of these before I bought an RS 3100 only my opinion but value for me is V8 Windsor over V6 Essex any day. I still struggle rebuilding my V6's though as really love them too. Oh the choices we all have in life.

I believe it is but I have not looked at it. It's being sold by the same guy I bought mine off though and I trust him to know what it is.

A Perana's tag is aluminium in the spaces that are stamped not white. If you search eBay for Perana in Germany you can buy badges which are good for a display but are not authentic. Under the front passenger seat should be a tag that matches to the ford tag denoting it's a Perana. Cross members are different and the front radiator support down low is different as well.

The one on eBay - appears to be a 4 cyl shell ( brake line tabs, inner guard are wrong). I know basil green used some 4 cyl shells but did he make the above adjustments
