Hey everyone,
Very new to this forum so not sure if I've posted in the right place, but I'm hoping I can get some help with this.

My dad recently purchased a 1974 MK1 Escort, (for nostalgic reasons I can assume ) and he's begun stripping it back to the basics as it needs quite a bit of work done.
I'm quite interested in the project myself, and I've been trying to find as much info online as possible as we're both very new to it all.

My question anyway is how would we go about removing the front and rear windscreens safely so we don't cause too much damage  . Is it something that we could do ourselves, and if so how would we go about it? Or is it something best left to people with more experience?

Thanks in advance for the help!

It's reasonably straightforward.....but best advice is to wait for a hot day and park the car in the sun for a couple of hours before doing the job.....

First take out the metallic looking filler strip, it will be brittle and hardened with age, maybe even black.

So you'll need a new one of those.

Then standing near the a pillar with door open, start pressing the glass out from the inside with the palm of your hand along the top, starting at one corner and working your way along. The glass and rubber come out together. The idea is to not put too much pressure at any one spot, as you don't want to overly flex the glass. If you need to gently lever the rubber way from the body flange, that's okay, as long as you're careful not to damage your headlining. Once the top edge has been pushed out, the whole screen should come out fairly easily.

Fitting is the reverse procedure

Hi
Please also note that if the windscreen Rubbers are rock hard brittle and crazed, usually from UV, they might not budge when trying to push them out.  Mine were like that, so I ended up getting a stanly knife and cutting away the outer part of the rubber so I could push them out.  If the rubbers are in bad condition like that they will have to be replaced so it doesn't matter if you have to butcher them to get the screen out.  They are readily available on Ebay from various sources.
