Hi guys,
 
The clutch fork on my 2-litre Mk2 (fitted with a Type 9 gearbox) is cracked. I have two questions:
 
1. Is it possible to replace the clutch fork without removing the engine/gearbox?
 
2. If not, would it be possible to weld the clutch fork where it is cracked?
 
I'm getting it ready for club rego, so getting this sorted quickly is a priority.

Hi Pete,
You would have to pull the gearbox out.
They can be welded but may crack again.

Best to weld up the cracks and then weld a plate across from one side to the other, boxing the whole thing in where the crack came up.
 
I've had 3 crack when using heavier than standard clutches, and this always fixes it permanently. I wont even put a standard fork in these days, I always weld the plate on first, even if not cracked yet.

I reckon you will be wasting your time welding it up as it will be pretty much guaranteed to break again even if you try and reinforce it. Just replace it!
Dont know where you are located but they arent hard to find through small ford specialists such as YesterfORD  in Melbourne.

Thanks for the advice guys. I have a spare clutch fork, so will whip the motor out and replace it.
