Is anyone able to tell me what i need to set my valve clearances to? I have set them to factory settings but its a re grind cam and they are quite noisy.

All the specs on the card they gave me say
running clearance inlet .008 exhaust .008
lift @ lobe inlet 264 ° exhaust 264°
Advertised timing
exhaust duration 280°
Inlet duration 280°
.050 valve timing
exhaust duration 230°
Inlet duration 230°

if someone could help me out id be very appreciative

What engine??
Are you measuring clearances when engine is hot or cold?
Are you reliably measuring from the base circle of the cam? (ie double checking measurements)
Is it all of the "tappets"/"followers" making the noise or just one or two?
Which oil are you using?
How old is the oil?
What valve springs are you using?
Are you getting plenty of oil onto the cam and the "tappets"
What condition are the "tappets" in?
Are you using oil additives?

My experiences with cams approaching, and over 0.5" lift, is that there is inevitably increased "tappets" noise (but depending on profile). Simply everything is working harder (and wear out faster) because of the increased lift.

Its a pinto it sounds like only one or two at idle worse when revving. They are standard springs and camtech followers. I am using 20w50 castrol gtx also the motor is fresh and has only been run for about an hour tops. I am measuring from the bottom of the lobe or when the lobe is pointing up in the air. I also set the first 2 while warm then let it cool then re measured and did the rest as thats what clive cams told me. I have run it with the cover off and oil is spraying on the cam evenly.

Thanks

Hi Wade, I have a Clive cams regrind in my pinto and it's pretty noisy. I didn't replace the followers at the time as it was just a budget freshen up until I can get the funds together for a decent build. Valve clearance specs for in/ex are 10 thou. I set them cold and on start up it sounded like a tractor. Reset them hot and no change. I have since set them at 8 thou for a marginal improvement. I've done about 4000km and it hasn't changed, better or worse. I'd say the the most likely cause is the reprofiled cam running on used followers as everything is set up right. I will be replacing it all with a decent cam kit to solve the problem. I can't hear it over the rattle from my aftermarket quick shift anyway.

Rocker angles are critical on Pinto's.  It is possible that the clearances are set right but they will still rattle and also wear out the cam and followers faster if they havent been set up right

I spoke to clive cams and they suggested i bring them up to .008 on inlet and exhaust did that tonight but no change :/

Could be the cam profile.
I am not a fan of Castrol GTX on these 2 litre engines.
When setting/checking the cam to follower clearance using the feeler gauge, with the gauge in place try rocking the follower side to side (ie to the front of the car and then to the rear of the car). There should be no side to side movement.

Seemed to have had a minor win. After adjusting them to .008 made no difference i noticed that both cam lobes on number 4 had looked like they had worn a little more than the rest so i changed the followers and upon inspection they seemed like they had a uneven surface so after changing them it is much quiter not 100% but an improvment

Now i need to figure out why its over heating when its sitting at idle in the shed im suspecting a sus thermostat but when i tested it in boiling water it seemed to open fine

Are there any hydraulic lifters that would work better.???

Does this mean even a small cam grind on a 2.0L Pinto stuffs the angles up.???

Causing excess wear.???
