i put a pair of DHLA 40's on a few hours ago, stoked with it, power was amazing, literally TEARING up first gear and following second dry! [:x)]

BUT then after a bit more driving it starts running like a dog.

this was coughing, spluttering, hesitating etc. not misfiring, and not back firing either end.

now my throttle cable is something i have to sort, because if i let the carbs idle at there own stop screw, then im not able to open the throttle fully by the pedal.

ive left the distributer un touched, and the vaccum advance is disconected (and blocked off)

using mechanical pump straight to carbs, no regulator..

did the carbs fully fill up and start overfuelling or something?

all help appreciated! and yes engine ran beautifully with stock carby before hand.

A regulator will stop the manual pump, over fueling the carbs at idle.

Save up, get a dyno tune & leave it.

good work sterlo.
just check your linkage shafts haven't come loose,as well which will make them run bad, also advance the timming a couple of degrees,no matter what if you want them to run good you will need a dyno tune.
I have run twin carbs 40s and 45s with and without a regulator and it made no differnce to the running of my cars, not that its the correct thing to do but it should run without one.

PS: Hows my 38dgas going????

cheers

I agree with the dyno tune. But if you want to have them running decent for the mean time, PM me your email address and I'll send you a DHLA tuning guide, it's very in depth and also shows you all the components in exploded views and all that.

Cheers.

well ive gotten the carbs to act a little nicer to me, i managed to get it running again, after cleaning the plugs with GP thinners, let it idle literally for a good 5 minutes, took it for a drive, stomped it, and WOW theres that power again! doesnt like harsh driving, need to take it tamely between each "open her up" session, otherwise the "choking" or "hesitating" begins again. atleast i will be able to drive it to a dyno place now.

the only problem still is that its an absoloute b*tch to start!, i set up a dodgy cable to use for the chokes, but it does do the job, and it still wont start. i have to be really patient for it to start, and this involves throttle work and jumper leads connected to mums discovery.

any ideas? or am i stuck with this until i get a professional tune?

Mine would always take a while to start, but that was also because of the high compression. Do you have an electric fuel pump? I suggest you get one, that way you won't need to bother with chokes, I never had to use the choke, even after 17 months off the road!
