Hi Guys,

i swear ive seen a mk2 with roof racks on it before... now im looking to get myself a roof rack so I can finally cart a surfboard without taking out the back seats.

Is there anyone in WA who is looking to get rid of their roof rack?

Or is there some sort of stocko roof rack that I can fit to the Mk2? What sort of clampin system would I need?

Secondly, im looking for the window seals for Mk2 coupe doors. Dont have to be in one piece, I can glue in part seals... right now ive got some massive gaps, which causes brutal noise at highway speeds!

Roof racks - Super Cheap/Bursons/Repco/etc universal gutter type

Window seals - known as Bailey Channel seals, most rubber specailists

I have some gutter mount rola roof racks that I'd be happy to get rid of. They came off a 2DR so they'd be perfect for your requirements.

jimmyd - thanks for the correct terms. that'll help me track down a set. I should be able to find something second hand in WA.

spanner - mate thanks for the offer, but i think the cost of delivery to WA would far outweigh the cost of the racks themselves.

I wouldn't bet on that. If you are planning to carry a surf board and your board is valuable to you, you dont want to put it on the crappy old steel bar style racks. Rola racks were actually designed for carrying boards and have a rubber strip along the top to protect the board.

Freight to WA on something as lightweight as this wouldn't be much. Rola racks new are worth around $200 a pair.

And what ever you do, dont tie the board down using octupus straps!

Backup Gdub on that - I bought new Rola racks for my Mk2 Van and they were expensive, but the Kayak that sits on top of them is worth as much as the Escort, and they're worth it.

I understand how the ol steelies could damage a board, but im only back in the country for another 4 weeks and the budget is limited. I've sourced a local steelie for $20, which I will fit rubber foam tubes over the cross bars in order to protect my cargo.

Im not dissing the merits of a good rola rack- if was here for a longer period and pulling in the cash I'd shell out for the rola racks.

so once again thanks for the advice and spanner for the offer.

one last question, GDub.. guess you've got an interesting tale about ocky straps. why shouldn't I use those??

I used to live in the Upper Hunter valley for years and I used my RS with the crappy steel racks and used occy straps for years. Travelled to Newcastle when I could(about 150kms 1 way) and to Coffs Harbour. no problems at all. I even went thru a flock of galahs and beheaded 1 of them too!

The risk with octopus straps is that they not hold tight enough due to their stretchy nature. This allows the board to flap even if only slightly. I have seen cases where this has caused the board to snap from the buffeting

never had any trouble, hook 1 side on the racks, over the board and back again. make sure they are long enough so they dont bruise the board. never had a lift off.
