I have a bad brake issue apart from also needing a brake booster on my 2L Mk2. Given the unknown issues i drive really carefully cos in the wet (bare in mind i have bad tyres too) if i slam on the brakes the back end swings out anti clock wise. In the dry if i slam on the brakes i cant make the car lock up. So in essence when i drive i leave massive gaps, the problem is people cut in front which is a real danger. I have rekitted the front calipers and new cyclinders on drums about 5 years ago and its progressively become this way. Do you think i have a master cylinder issue?
 
Any help would be great. Am chasing a booster in good working order.
 
BTW has anyone ever considered this. I believe the stud pattern is not too far off

Have you checked your rear brakes recently, you may have a leaking or seized wheel cylinder, this will effect how the rear brakes operate and can cause uneven braking performance and pulling from one side.
 
Do you have a hard brake Pedal? My old Mk2 once developed poor braking and a hard pedal due to the vacuum hose from the intake manifold crimping itself where it does a sharp turn after the intake manifold fitting. Once a new hose was fitted brakes were good once again.

Thanks Blue74, funny you should mention the seized wheel cylinder. When i back up from driveway i notice the car automatically brakes, however i think its cause the handbrake cable rolls with the differential making the cable taught. This now eludes me to possible broken leaf spring(s) allowing the rolling of diff to happen. I will have a look at wheel cylinder

With regards to the 'automatic braking' when reversing up your driveway.
Make sure that the four bolts that attach the brake backing plate & rear axle bearing retainer plate to the diff housing aren't loose.
I had the same thing happen some time ago & that's what it was. 
As for the rest. . . I'd be checking the things that have already been suggested.

Think you will find Mk2 Escorts don't have a proportioning valve. The unit below the master cylinder is a pressure differential switch. It senses a difference in line pressure between the front & rear systems and brings the light on to warn you that the brakes have failed. (Although I'm pretty sure you'll know before the light comes on) 
 
Sounds to me like contaminated linings (brake fluid or oil) or the brake shoes fitted the wrong way around - leading & trailing arse about or an adjustment issue where the self adjuster is not working. Be sure to let us know what you find.
