I am restoring a Australian made 1977 2.0GL Escort which had factory air conditioning but was removed when I got it. I would like to restore it to orginal and refit it. All the parts (i think) to put it back on but not sure how the compressor and alternator fit on the engine. 
 
Anyone with any photos or knowledge of the air-conditioning in an Escort?

Hi Ross,
I'll get some pics of mine up when I get the car out over the weekend, hopefully they're the same Ford raided the parts bin when they put them together, vents are from TE Cortina, ashtray - falcon, clock - Fairlane etc. Compressors varied and were mounted on either side of engine, I've got the all in one alternator/ compressor type too.
Out of interest is your battery in the boot, this seemed to vary too..........

Heres the pics.... I've mounted it up on the spare engine as we had buckleys of getting a shot of it in the engine bay, it's a tight squeeze in there with the brake booster on top and bottom hose in the way. Sorry about the lack of water pump and bottom pulley it should be the double row type..... You may need to shim all the bolts to get the belts to line up properly.....

Great thank you for that. Also what do you use for a bottom radiator hose as the standard doesn't fit I found?

I'm having that drama too. At the moment it's got a fresh bit of hose with a forming sleave, like a spring that slips in and holds its shape when bent into place, it's damn ugly and took a fair bit of shaping. It clears (just) but I'm not real happy with it. I wasn't sure on the belt either, ended up getting a rough measurement with string and got one from the same tractor shop as the sleave, lol (I deal with them through work) The compressor sits as high as it will go and all seems to turn ok.

Hi, I am missing the compressor, do you know which other cars had the same air con  compressor fitted. Looking at your pics Drewdog I have seen what looks like a similar item advertised on Ebay.

Looks the same, can't make out the brand as my stickers pretty far gone, I can make out SD-508, model number 8390 if that's of any help.......... some of the TE Cortina pintos were fitted with a/c, might be worth a look..... Can't see why you couldn't use another compressor although they are specific to left and right fittings. The spacing for the mounts is 85mm from inside to inside but it could be shimmed to fit, you may have to work out the pulley ratio to get it right but don't quote me on that I'm still doing a crash course on auto air conditioning myself....... I've been out to the shed for a look and with every rotation of the crank the factory compressor is turning a fraction short of 1 rotation too.

Looks to me like its a Sanden compressor. Used on just about every aftermarket air conditioning fitment for the last 30 or more years. Equivalents are still available as I am chasing one for a customer for his 80series landcruiser. Was told the serial number is what you need to order as it states what size outlets & angles for the pipes etc.
 
If it were mine I would use a smaller more modern compressor, surely there will be something half the size.

The air con compressor is the same set up fitted under the bonnet as my RS. This is not factory as they mount the compressor on the distributer side, thus moving the battery to the boot. From my own experience the compressor you are chasing is available, however you can not get the recharging points on the back of the compressor any longer, so I had recharge points fitted to the hoses.
The compressor position was fine until I fitted extractors and they fowled on the alternator, so I needed to redesign the bracket with the alternator sitting lower, this however meant the compressor need to sit lower, and in the end the bottom radiator hose goes in-between the hose.
